I have noticed that the battery bays in the BG-E1 battery grip isn't completely filled by the BP-511 battery pack (see attached picture). This is quite different the BG-ED3 grip, where the bay is shaped exactly like the battery pack. Just wondering if anyone had given this much thought . . . such as maybe another battery pack would fit in the slot.
At first, I had thought maybe it was designed so that the Canon NB-2LH 7.4v 720mAh Lithium-ion rechargeable battery pack (battery for the Digital Rebel XT) would fit. But after looking at the contact, it doesn't seem to be a match.

Ok, while reading the Canon EOS System brochure, I found out that the cut out is for the Canon BP-514 battery pack. The Digital Rebel camera body's battery bay has the same shape. I suspect that the Digital Rebel can also take advantage of the BP-514 battery pack.
The Canon BP-514 battery pack were used on the Canon ZR90, ZR85, and ZR80 MiniDV camcorders. I guess if you have one of these camcorders, you can share batteries with the Digital Rebel and the BG-E1 vertical grip.
By the way, the BG-E2 grip for the Canon EOS 20D can also take advantage of the BP-514 battery pack.

Ron, that slot is for the Canon DC Coupler DR-400. When you insert the dummy battery, the cable can be routed through the slot. You'll see a similar slot on your Digital Rebel.

Can you use a 511 and 511a battery at the same time? Are they both Lithium Ion?

Yes, you can use BP-511 and BP-511a at the same time. They are both Lithium Ion batteries. The only difference is their capacity. BP-511 is rated at 1100 mAh while BP-511a is rated at 1390 mAh.
