Continuing my quest to find the small and stylish digital camera, which supports TIFF/RAW image format, I decided to visit Leica's web site. Leica is world-famous for making very exclusive, stylish, classy, and retro-looking cameras. The performance capability of a Leica lens is also world-class. Leica cameras are generally marketed to professional and advanced-amateur photographers with their extraordinary manual control even in its rangefinders. Leica is well known in the film world, but what about the digital world?
Despite being in the camera industry for so long, I have never ever visited the Leica web site. And my first impression of its web site is that it is hard to navigate. Its web site is mainly in German text and it took me a while to find the "English" link. Once I had converted the web page to English, I was expecting its compact digital camera link to pop out at me. But it wasn't that easy. In instead, its products list started with "M-System, R-System, ...". Were these film or digital cameras? I had to search for my memory. What saved me from navigating into each category was my experience with the camera industry and I remember vaguely these are Leica's SLR systems.
Finally, I spotted "Digital Cameras", five lines down from the top, three lines below the "Compact Cameras" category. Good thing I knew about Leica's reputation, because finally finding the right link is rewarding. The following are Leica's digital cameras and which image formats they support:
RAW (DNG) and TIFF
Leica Digital Module R
RAW and TIFF
Leica Digilux 2
Leica D-Lux 2
JPEG Only
Leica D-Lux
Most of Leica's digital cameras supported both RAW and TIFF format, with the exception of the D-Lux., the smallest of the bunch. The Leica Digital Module R is a large interchangeable lens DSLR camera that is too big for my purpose. The Leica Digilux 2 is a rangefinder that is almost SLR size, which is also too big.
However, the Leica D-Lux 2 seems to be, so far, my dream compact camera. It's small size fits in my pocket. It supports RAW and TIFF. And it support full manual control: manual focus, aperture priority, shutter priority, and manual exposure. If only it's little brother, the D-Lux, had these features, then it would be a killer cameras. The optical image stabilization of the Leica D-Lux 2 is a real plus when producing photographs in lowlight situations. I think my heart is set on purchasing this camera for my needs.
But before I do, there are about three to four more manufacturers to check out. Although I'm pretty much set on the Leica D-Lux 2, it would be worthwhile to see what they offer. And I wanted to compare the camera sizes and style of all the cameras that can produce RAW/TIFF images.
