iPhone 3G Camera

Being a photographer, I enjoy having a good quality camera on my phone. Not too many companies stand out when I think of cameraphones except Apple. I'm an early adopter of new tech toys and I had my iPhone shortly after they first came out. Back then the camera on the iPhone was alright, definitely not the greatest, but it functioned just as I wanted it to. When Apple debuted the iPhone 3Gs I was astounded by the better quality pictures it took. It was almost as if I had a 5mp camera built into my phone... or even the other way around, a phone built into a camera. In actuality though the camera is only 3mp, but the shots it takes are fantastic and they are good enough to print to 4x6 but I wouldn't recommend an 8x12.

I was floored. Even in the dim lighting conditions of some bars and restaurants I could still take reasonable photos without much grain or noise in the background. A flash would come in handy sometimes but unless you're willing to shell out the cash for an iPhone 4 you're out of luck.

Another problem I noticed, but to be honest was expected, was it's less than stellar quality of photos when taking pictures of fast moving objects. When you take a photo of something moving fast, for example a train or a car in motion, it results in a subject that is stretched and distorted almost like looking in a fun house mirror. To artists though this might not be a problem as you can capture some pretty interesting and eye catching images this way.

But Apple did not stop there, they even improved the less than spectacular focusing features that the iPhone 1&2 had problems with. You used to only be able to focus on something as long as it was at least a foot and a half away from the lens, but now you can focus on objects that are only a few inches away. Another added feature I thought was useful was the touch focus feature, where all you have to do to focus on a particular subject is touch on the screen where the object or person is located and the phone will automatically focus the frame. Although it is not the quality of auto focus you would find on DSLR or even that of a point and shoot, it still does the job well enough to get clear pictures almost every time.

Overall the camera feature of the iPhone is a large step up from the original and with the iPhone 4 Apple made leaps and bounds in their camera technology, but the phone is still too pricey for me to want to upgrade, so until they decide to lower the price I'll stick with my iPhone 3Gs.
