Last month, I purchased the Tuofeng® Wf-502b Infrared Night Vision Infrared 950nm 5w Cree Flashlight for Night Vision Goggles, Night Vision Camera, Digital Camera. This torch produce purely IR light with no visible light. I wanted to use it to light up the scene to film airsoft action video at night. But after receiving the IR torch, I noticed that it doesn't work very well with the camera phones. Apparently most phones had IR filters in place. So most phone cameras only saw the IR flood from a few inches away. I had tried many phones, and none of them work for my intended purpose.
In this thread, I am going to document the result for each of the phones I tried. You are also welcome to document your results. This way, we can help each other find the right phone without duplicating trials.
I am going to use a small toy gun to show effective distance and scale. The gun is show below. I am going to try taking photoa of the gun with the IR torch and each SmartPhone.

Apple iPhone 5C filters out the 950nm IR completely, as shown in the photo below. This 950nm IR torch does not produce any visible light at all. So the Apple iPhone 5C photo thinks it is off.
How do you know the IR torch is actually on? I will prove it to you in the next photo, taken by Google LG Nexus 5.

The photo below is taken with the Google LG Nexus 5. It is taken at the same time that I have taken the Apple iPhone 5c photo aabove
As you can see in the photo below that the IR torch is emitting infrared light. The Google LG Nexus 5 also has a IR filter, but it is not as strong as the IR filter in the Apple iPhone 5c.

Title: DIY Inexpensive Night Vision
Weblog: Airsoft SpecOps
Excerpt: My teammate and I just had an epiphany. As we are talking about our loadout for the zombies apocalypse airsoft game this Saturday, we came up with an inexpensive DIY night vision setup that everyone can afford.
