Automating power off and power on of Canon S5?

I have a need to remotely power on a Canon Powershot S5. Unfortunatley it has a dial for the power, that snaps back to center position. In other words, the dial doesn't remain in an "on" position when the camera is powered on, the dial is essentially a lever that turns to press a button.

I'd rather not disassemble the camera, unless its pretty easy and fool proof to do.

I was thinking about a stepper motor that turns the dial?

Wondering if anyone has ever encountered this issue?

In this picture you can see the power knob:

To power the camera on, it turns to the red position and then snaps back to center.

It looks like this forum doesn't send out notifications of new posts, so if possible please also reply to wrybread at gmail dot you know what.
