D-SLR focusing speed

The attached photo was taken on film - with a Nikon F801 and 35-70mm f3.5-4.5 zoom. I was shocked at how difficult it was to focus my subject, (camera was set on continuous-focus). The attached picture was eventually shot by pre-focusing, and waiting till the subject was briefly stationary before swinging back - still not successful.

My old Nikon takes at least one second searching for the focusing point, and by that time the subject is already out of focus.

In a shop, I picked up the new Canon EOS 350 ( AKA Digital Rebel) and I almost fell for buying it, because focusing seemed to be instantly. Wherever I turned the camera, the image was pin-sharp.

I am however reluctant of switching to Canon, due to my investment in lenses, and I want to know if anyone on the net can tell me whether the Nikon D70 will bring me faster focusing than the F80 and F301 did.

I can find several reviews on the net, but no-one seems to test the focusing speed. I would love to see a comparison between the new EOS 350 and D70 in terms of focusing speed (with their respective kit lenses).

Thanks

My guess is no. It is my understanding that the D70 uses the same focusing module as the F80 (cam900) so I can't see why it would be any faster. With an AF-S lens though the D70 seems very quick though. The conclusion to draw from this is that it is the focus motor in the camera body that is slow as this is not used with AF-S lenses.

a D70 w/ AF-S lenses is VERY fast. The 350D you tried probably had a USM lens on it, thats why it was so fast.
