Overview of the Olympus PEN E-PL1s

The Olympus PEN E-PL1s is a Micro Four Thirds digital camera boasting a 12.30 Megapixel resolution, with a 14-42mm 3 x zoom lens kit, and incorporating a state of the art 2.7 inch LCD viewfinder. The PEN Lite E-PL1s has an ISO of 100-6,400 equivalant, a shutter operation of 60-1 / 2000, and also a handy 3.5 aperture. Although externally identical to the previous model it does come with a wider range of colors. The original E-PL1 was shipped in kit form with the M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 zoom lens, with a collapsible 3 x zoom design to keep its compact appearance. Unfortunately there was some issues with image vertical blurring with shutter speeds of around 1/100 and 1/200 of a second, respectively the newer PEN-PL1s is equipped with a new improved M.Zuiko Digital 14-42mm F3.t-5.6 II optic capabilities. However inside the latest Olympus it offers a maximum sensitivity double that of the E-PL1 with an ISO of 6,400 equivalant, combining the 12 Megapixel, Live MOS image sensor, and TruePic 5 image processor. The other significant update is the lens which has been adopted from the groundbreaking Olympus MSC (Movie & Still Compatible) design, these types of lenses have great auto focus motors which are able to focus fast, sharp and accurately, and special attention has been taken to muffle the noise, so as to enhance the overall sound quality of high definition movie recordings. Other features added which are of some notoriety is the pop-up flash action, the dedicated movie record button, Live Guide mode, EMA-1 microphone adapter accessories, and VF-2 electronic viewfinder support, and also including a SD/SDHC card storage facility.

The dimensions and weight have been specifically design to give a very compact feel but with a picture quality of a much more expensive digital camera, at only (115 x 72 x 42 mm), and weighing 16.1 oz (456 g) which includes batteries, kit lens. The new BLS-5 lithium ion battery pack added to the Olympus PL1s offers longer intervals between charging and the camera can also accept batteries from other PEN-series digital cameras. The all new BCS-5 charger is also included in the purchase of the camera, however the BLS-5 battery pack cannot be charged with the BSC-1 charger just as a note. Previously the PL1s was only announced for the Japanese market, but can be purchased online from various retailers, with single lens bundles starting in excess of $500.
