Upgrade your Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1 firmware to turn it into a DMC-FZ2

Surfing around on the Internet today, I came across an article to turn your Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1 digital into a DMC-FZ2 simply by upgrading the firmware. See Related Links section for specifications on these two cameras. Sounds like a fantastic hack. The following are two locations for the same article, though one might be slightly more up-to-date. Both locations have the new firmware to download, so if one ever disappears, you can always try the other one.

Good luck and let us know how well this hack worked on your camera.

Whoa, this hack is cool! The pictures are noticably better in 1600x1200 low quality mode withthe better compression! Do it to it and enjoy!

This hack works great! I now have a FZ 2. Actually now there is less compression in 1600 X1200. You get fewer pictures to a card but photo quality is better. Seems like focus is faster and more precise. Its nice to have the zoom show up in the viewfinder as you can tell where you are at and set it accordingly. 1X=35mm, 2x=70mm, 3x=105mm etc. [translated into 35 mm tel lense] 105 being the best for portraits.

Hi Chieh,
I was wandering if you have (or still have) the Panasonic FZ1 firmware upgrade file, as I couldn't find it on the links you have on your page.
I'd appreciate much if you can send it to me.
Thank you.

Hi Ciprian. I don't have the firmware. Should have attached a copy to the forum post earlier.

It downloaded fine for me if you go and try it, it should be there...:)

I'm ressurecting my FZ1 for a trip. Installed the firmware update without problems. Now I have a question:

What is the largest SD card that the camera is compatible with. I think I'm limited to 1GB, but it would be nice to bump it up to the full 4GB. (I assume that SDHC is a non-starter:o)
