Pentax Digital Cameras that Support RAW and TIFF

I have already found my dream compact digital camera in my last article of this series. It's the Leica D-Lux 2 digital camera. But not wanting to short-change myself, I'm looking at the last three to four digital camera manufacturers.

The next manufacturer I visited is Pentax. Pentax makes very good camera. One of my college buddies swear by their SLR film camera. I have always though Pentax cameras and lenses are quite potent. Plus, they have one of the largest and slickest compact camera line-up on the market. Although, by now, I'm used to the rejection that most digital camera manufacturers simply don't provide RAW or TIFF mode in their compact digital cameras, I figured that Pentax ought to know photographers.

I went to Pentax's web site, but what do you know? It's main navigation menu uses Flash. And I happen to be on a computer that didn't have Flash installed. After going through the frustration of having to move onto another computer just to find the Pentax page, I finally managed to collect the information needed for this write-up. If you are a web site designer, don't use Flash for the main navigation vehicle. Use it for what it's intended, promotional jazz.

The following is where Pentax compact digital cameras fall in the image format arena:

TIFF
Pentax Optio750Z

JPEG Only
Pentax Optio A10
Pentax Optio E10
Pentax Optio M10
Pentax Optio S45
Pentax Optio S55
Pentax Optio S5z
Pentax Optio S6
Pentax Optio S60
Pentax Optio SV
Pentax Optio T10
Pentax Optio W10
Pentax Optio50
Pentax Optio60
Pentax OptioWP
Pentax OptioWPi

After visiting so many different camera manufacturer's web sites, I'm not all that surprised by Pentax's offerings. I had a feeling I wasn't going to find what I need before I started. It was surprising that even the top Pentax compact digital camera did not support RAW, even though it did support TIFF. I figured Pentax would have been right up there with Canon, Fuji, Nikon, and Olympus as group of manufacturers that really know photographers. I was wrong.

The Pentax Optio750Z would probably be adequate for my need, but it looked big and bulky. And of course, it's no comparison to the Leica D-Lux 2. I will still compare the Pentax Optio750Z to the rest of its peers after I'm all done with my search.
