Reaching far, with the Pentax X70 Megazoom Digital Camera

Once upon a time a 'Pentax' meant one of the best brands of 'Made in Japan' film cameras in the market. With the arrival of the Digicam revolution, every other electronics manufacturer jumped into the fray and Pentax got somewhat lost in the crowd. Now, it looks like Pentax is pushing back at all the 'me too's and how! Just take a look at the Pentax X70 Megazoom Digital Camera and you will be amazed!

The compact and light-weight camera body holds an amazing 24X optical zoom lens mechanism, offering a wide-angle 26mm focal length, suitable for scenery and group photos, to an 624mm super telephoto setting. When used with the 'Intelligent Zoom' function, the focal length can be extended up to 3900mm in the 35mm format; which is incredible for such a compact camera.

Thanks to a 12 mega pixel CMOS sensor and a high-performance imaging engine, the X70 captures high quality images in almost any shooting mode. Image composition can be done via the bright 2.7 inch color LCD screen (230,000 dots resolution) or the electronic viewfinder, both of which can be used to view the camera's menu options.

The Shake Reduction system uses a high-performance gyro sensor to detect any camera shake and adjusts the CCD image sensor vertically and horizontally at high speed. This ensures sharply focused and blur-free images in almost any condition. The X70 also features a 'face detection' system that can recognize up to 32 faces in a single image and adjust settings accordingly in approximately 0.03 seconds. Also built in are the 'Smile recognition' and the 'Blink detection' features. The Red-eye reduction system can be used during capture, or as a post-capture filter.

The X70 has an auto sensitivity control range that can be set from ISO 50, all the way up to ISO 6400. When it comes to recording movie clips, the X70 can also capture video in 848x480, VGA and QVGA resolutions at 30 frames per second or at 15 fps in high-definition TV (1280 x 720 pixels) mode.

The negative points about this camera are mainly around the low battery back-up, with the number of images captured per fully charged battery being around 150 - 170 and also the fact that apart from the amazing zoom, the other features may not be enough bang-for-your-buck, when compared to the competitors.

To summarize, the Pentax X70 is a powerful, yet easy to use all-rounder camera. Suitable for the normal point and shoot pics in the auto mode, it is powerful enough to deliver almost DSLR level capabilities with a variety of manual settings and modes.
