is there a better one?

Nikon Coolpix S550 10 MP Digital Camera with 5x Optical Zoom (Graphite Black)

my cousin's looking for one with the following features:

* better zoom
* auto-flash - as in it knows itself if flash is necessary

may be also girly looking. but I don't think that's as important.

I'm actually looking for a camera that has:
1. more than 3x zoon (just seems to be the norm out there)
2. in ADDITION to auto-flash, it needs to have a manual flash (i'd like to be able to use the flash even when the camera does not feel like it needs it)
3. Not essential, but it would be VERY nice if the camera had cropping capabilities...and be able to save the new zoomed in/ cropped picture as a new picture.
4. it would actually be better if it were NOT girly looking.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

Strike the girly part! (But not really...)

Personally, I think the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 is the best P&S camera on the market right now. And it has fully programmable flash, in addition to fully programmable everything else. And no one will ever see that camera as a girly-looking camera. Though I would like that as a feature. Unfortunately, I don't think it has the longest zoom.

Cool! There is a lot of programming?

When I said "programming", I meant there are a lot of adjustable controls. You can set everything and anything.

the most you'll probably get is 4x optical zoom, unless you move up to a prosumer model. that means you have to move up from an ultracompact to a compact or standard size camera. but the lens will be better so you'll get better, clearer pics, and you'll get more light in the lens for better pics. i can recommend a few if you want to go that way. personally i use an ultracompact canon sd850is. image stabilization is great to have especially if it's in-lens. then i have a full on digital slr for better pics.

some decent places to look up some suggestions are...

Canon A720 IS
6X optical zoom
all the bells and whistles,
8mp,
full manual mode plus,
Aperture Priority,
Shutter Priority and
plenty of scene modes.

Great pic quality and since it's now an year or so old, sells for around 200 bucks.

Only flaws, longish cycle time between shots when using the flash (camera runs on 2 AA batteries, if you use good 2500 mAh AA Rechargeable Nimh batteries the cycle time will be much less) the LCR is a bit hard to see in bright sun (not an uncommon flaw) and the view finder is a bit small, but OTOH, most compact cameras don't even offer a view finder anymore so it's a big plus just to have one.
