After having built quite a few timelapse-systems based on DSLR's that are triggered by external shutter timers, I started searching for compact non-DSLR cameras with external shutter connectors. I couldn't find one! Even the four-thirds ans micro-four-thirds cameras that are players in the serious league, don't have such a connector AFAIK.
I just can't believe it.
Any suggestions? Have I overseen the camera I need?
Thank you for your input!

In terms of Olympus cameras, the XZ-1 supports the RM-UC1 wired shutter release that is used in most of their DSLRs (except E-1/E-3/E-5). Three of the four Pens (E-P1, E-P2, and E-PL2, but not E-Pl1) also use the RM-UC1.
In the past, the SP series (such as the SP-550UZ that I own) also supported the RM-UC1, but the current models (SP-600UZ, SP-800UZ, and the new SZ- cameras) don't seem to support it.
On ebay, you can find various shutter releases that are compatible with the RM-UC1, some wired, some radio, and some with countdown timers.
The Mumford time machine has a bunch of different triggers (sound, crossed laser beams, etc.) that work with various shutter release cables, though I imagine once you get the basic wire, if you are handy at cable hacking you can fashion your own. http://www.bmumford.com/photo/camctlr.html

Title: Samsung SH100 with WiFi and Android App
Weblog: Camera Hacker
Excerpt: I forgot when I posted the previous article that in January, Samsung announced the SH100, which has WiFi builtin, and you can control it from a smart phone. I don't know if the ABI is exposed so that anybody could write an Android app to control the phone, or what type of s/w they provide: http://ww . . .
