hi Chieh!
i'd like to ask for your assistance on where to acquire a new canon 300d cf unit. i'd just bent one of the pins in my cf unit when i wrongly inserted my cf card and i need to manually replace this one. i need your opinion on this. Thanks. And also, if you have such hack to external storage as an alternative to the cf card please tell me so.

Mark,
I'm also looking for the same thing . . . actually a SD Card socket for my HP iPAQ H3955. I haven't found it yet. (If anyone knows where to get a SD socket, let me know.)
I did find a generic CF socket from Newark InOne. Maybe it'll work for you:
MOLEX 67155-0002 CF Surface Mount Connector
If you want a Canon genuine part, than try contacting Canon: Canon EOS Digital Camera Limited Warranty for EOS Digital Rebel
Someone on the newsgroups pointed me to this following web site. It's got camera parts (not the CF connector though) and parts diagram for the Digital Rebel. You will probably find it handy . . .

Chieh!
I have noticed from the spec sheet on the link you've recommended about that generic cf unit for the Canon 300d that it has 'long guide rail for longer lead into mating interface' which may not fit into the camera's casing.
*Refer to the attached gif file for the illustration.
I'm thinking that ch9-1036 might be eliminated to let molex's cf unit fit into the body but I'm not sure that's the real solution. This part is generic so it should fit to any camera housing but I doubt. Help me again on this.
Thank you very much.

How about cutting the longer guide rail to length?

Hi Chieh!
I've had my 300D CF Card slot broken and I'm wondering if this slot
replacement would be compatible for it. Check the link below.
Hoping for your helpful response.

The link you provided doesn't seem to take me any where specific. Would you provide a new link? Thanks.

Please check the attached pdf. This is the card slot component. Would this be a viable replacement for my broken 300D slot? Thanks.

It doesn't look exactly the same as the 300D CompactFlash connector. But if you are willing to bend the pins and do some jury-rigging, it will probably work. There is no way to tell for sure until you hvae the part on hand and have taken the 300D apart to see. I think it's worthwhile, the connector is only a few bucks. Even if it's not appropriate, you've only parted with a few bucks.
If you want a sure way to have fix your 300D yourself, you can buy the Canon Digital Rebel Main PCB Assembly and place it in. It's not the most inexpensive way, but it's the quickest.
I've ordered Nikon Coolpix 950 Neck Strap Holder. Nikon Part#: 636-053-9556 from them just a week ago to fix my Nikon 950. The part came in three days.
Good luck, let me know how it goes.

The major problem with the Digital Rebel
CF socket and cage is that it is soldered
on the main board and that these solder
joins are subjected to the forces of the
user.
That like the similary soldered in power connectors found with note book
computer fail due to repeated stressing
by the force applied by the user.
It is as if the engineer that designed
or decided this soldered on mount would
himself would hang a chandeler by its
electrical wires alone.
Is that good enough?
Pictured here is a photo of what happens when the solder joins are
repeatably exposed to the applied force
of the user of a Digital Rebel CF
cartridge connector.
You can see that there are these cracks
around some of the legs at the center
group that caused a error 02.
I had changed the mounting design so
to use longer wire loops between the
CF cartridge bay header and the solder
pads on the board.
The CF cartridge bay was claspeed in a
steel plate and mounted to the camera's
metal framework.
Now the stress is transfered to the
frame that is meant to take force and
not the poor solerer joins.
There where six other problems with
this camera that were fixed that
resulted in better then new.
I have pictures of that too if anyone
wants to look at that.
Eventualy the pictires will be posted
on a web page in six months from now.
Have more projects ahead of this.

I have a canon 300D which I haven't used since it stopped working while in Hawaii 3 years ago. The pictures started getting lighter and lighter, then I got the err 02 message. If the card's not in I get power & can use the menu. I tried new cf cards, no luck. Finally checked the pins in the cf slot today, and there are 2 missing at opposite corners. I assume that's the problem. Not savvy enough to fix it myself...any ideas how much Canon will charge to fix if I send it to them?

Nancy,
I have the same issue as well. I took it to a local authorized canon repair shop and they wanted $220.00 to replace the card slot and about two weeks. hope that helps!
Anyone:
The link for the main pcb board above is not working any ideas?

A small quantity of flux should be applied to those joints.
This should NOT be too much because excessive flux will act as an insulator.
A small quantity of solder paste applied to each leg.
Press gently down on socket so that it is flush with the board.
Heat base of legs up until solder melts.
Whip away heat and allow to set.
Do not cool the joint too quickly else dry joints can occur.
Make sure there are no solder jumpers.
Clean off residual flux.
(Unless legs or pads are damaged) THERE WOULD BE NO NEED TO CHANGE THE BOARD.
COST OF Compact Flash Socket with eject button (about $5.00).
Cost of New Canon Compact Flash Socket Board
(Canon change the whole unit) about $45.00
Cost of Canon, non warranty repair about $300.00.
This is NOT Green IS Inefficiency and customer ("consumer") exploitation.
Electrical Technician.
