8 GB SD Card on Canon IXUS 50

Please help! I have a Canon IXUS 50; before I have used Kingston SD memory cards. Today I got a new 8GB one, from the same company, but my camera says the card is locked... I have moved the switch into both locked and unlcoked positions but neither works. Yet my laptop reads the card fine. Could it be something to do with my camera being quite old and the memory card new????

Your Ixus is not compatible with the "new" SDHC standard, it should be compatible - like mine - with the SD standard that allows a maximum size of 2 GBs
