The built-in mono microphone sucks, and gets overwhelmed by loud volume levels, such as when shooting live bands.
I've considered experimenting with small slices of earplug foam over the porthole on the side to take some of the air pressure off of it. (bass)
Ideally, I'd like to plug a nice quality external (mono) mic in, so clipping and levels and such can be worked out before the signal gets to the internal mic amp. I'd rather not mess with video editing software and audio syncing and all that for everything that I shoot.
I've removed the front shell, and the mic is sitting right there (loose) on the left side of the camera in its little mic nest, with a red and black wire running from it, just begging to be messed with. Also, under the mic, the plastic subframe looks like it's got about 3mm or more of space which could be drilled out without compromising the innards of the camera. (small rca jack maybe?) Anyway, I don't mind running a jack to the outside of the camera, if need be.
So there's a passive mic sitting there, presumably attached to a small amplifier. I believe that the mic amplification is software controllable in other G-series camera, with and without the alternative firmware. My question is; What sort of signal is the camera expecting to receive from the mic? If I run this line out of the camera and hook up a random mic, would that buy me any fidelity? What if it's a battery powered mic? What if it's a field recorder with a mono out, run straight to the mic line? Could I fry the little bugger?
The part # on the mic is KS13 4409
