Meet the Canon EOS Rebel T1i

The Canon EOS Rebel T1i is one of the latest additions into Canon's DSLR range. It is also the first in the Rebel range which comes with full HD video capture capabilities. It is capable of 720p HD video capture at 30fps or a full HD 1080p video capture at 20fps. The core consists of a 15.1-megapixel CMOS and the DIGIC 4 image processor. It comes with a 3.0 inch 'Clear-View' LCD screen, with anti-reflective and scratch-resistant coating.

With the recommended retail price is set at $899 with the EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens kit and $799 for a body only version, it certainly does raise the bar for entry level DSLRs in 2009.

One of the first impressions of the camera is that while the camera feels quite well balanced; it is not as ruggedly built as some of Canon's other DSLRs such as the EOS 5D, looks like Canon may have had to cut a few corners somewhere to cross the price barrier.

Apart from the regular ISO 100 to ISO 3200 range, the T1i also has an expanded ISO 6400 and ISO 12800 settings. It comes with the all the three Canon standard AF modes; i.e. Quick, Live and Face Detection Live modes. One more significant step in the right direction is the EOS Integrated Cleaning System with a Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit.

Other features include the Auto Lighting Optimizer and Canon's Creative Auto Mode which allows users to adjust aperture settings, exposure compensation or shutter-speed through the onscreen navigation menu. It allows users to play around with the settings while still enjoying the safety of the Auto mode.

Available since early May 09, once the first gush of oohs and aahs died down, some negative remarks about the camera did pop-up on various forums, usually about the build quality and the somewhat lower battery life. But the numbers of positive comments outnumber the cons, mainly about the easy to use menu options, the bright LCD which is easier to view even on sunny days and the light-weight construction which makes it a handy camera.

Under various conditions, the EOS Rebel T1i yields a Wake-to-shoot timing between 0.2 seconds to 0.8 seconds, which is significantly better than many competitors in this price range.

On the whole, the Rebel T1i is a really good entry level buy for anyone looking to step into the DSLR world.
