I have a Fy\uji Finepix F30 and would like to know how I cxan access the firmware to enable the other features this camera has, especially I Auto ISO selections which are limited to only two. Also, to enable more full manual options, except for maybe for focus as this is a P&S camera.
This camera has many fine attributes and could be the ulrimate P&S if the all the features could be made available.
Any suggestions/help will be appreciated by many.
Thank you
Mike

Sorry for the typos. Here is the corrected comment:

How about hacking or firmware update to allow or enable RAW output? That would be great. (Actually, I have the F20, and would also enjoy the Aperature and Shutter Priority modes that were disabled in this model.)
Great camera...

More manual options to adjust would be so nice, about the only thing missing on this cam! i love it

There is a firmware update for the F30 publicly available, so there would at least a basis to build upon.

The firmware update dumps something on a formatted xD card. I don't have an F30,
but it would help if someone could do a firmware update with a USB monitoring
program, and then dumping the binary contents of the card. From what I've read,
the firmware is only copied on the memory card. The camera reads it from there
and updates itself. So, I guess the xD card could be modified and used in
another camera.
I tried looking in the .DAT file, but it looks very obnoxious... There are
long repeated sequences all over the file and very little (if any) readable
text. It would be way easier to work on the memcards' data.

I wanna help!
I have a FinePix F30 and am just about to upgrade its firmware to version 1.02.
I have an external xD card reader so I probably can "dump" the contents of the card after the Firmware upgrade.
Please tell me how do proceed, what programs to use and who to send the dumped binary.
That would be really great to have a hacked firmware for this camera

Put me in on the list I am looking for a small compact, High ISO camera that shoots RAW for underwater. I would buy either the f30 or f31 if either could be made to produce a raw file.

When I upgraded the firmware on my camera (originally version 1.00), I successfully done it by simply copying the file to the card using a card reader: I formatted the card (Olympus 1GB Type H) in the camera, then placed the card in my card reader and copied the DAT file to it. I then loaded the card back in the camera, connected the power supply, turned on the camera by holding down the 'DISP/BACK' button while powering on and followed the on-screen steps until the firmware process completed showing version 1.02.
As the camera does not mount as a mass storage drive unlike some other digital cameras and some consumers just connect the camera to the PC instead of using a card reader to offload photos, I reckon that the transfer software basically dumps the DAT to the card, possibly also to verify that it copies successfully.
So far, I have found the camera to be superb for most of my usage, especially with indoor photography, however, the two features I miss that my last camera had were manual A/S and focus to infinity, features I know that virtually any digital camera could do if supported by the firmware.
On my last camera, it was possible to control both the Aperture and Shutter together, making it straight forward to take a series of photos for preparing a panorama without worrying about the exposure changing between the photos. The focus to infinity would also be useful for night-time long exposure outdoor photography, as quite often the camera does not focus properly when taking photos in very dim lighting, where as if the focus is set to infinity, this would not be an issue. For close-up, the AF lamp is generally enough to focus properly, even in the dark. It's a pity very few (if any) manufacturers offer a RAW mode on compact cameras, especially with how large flash memory cards have got, however, it looks like the lack of RAW is the manufacturer's way of saying - if you want RAW, go get an SLR.

Hi,
So has someone found a way to activate RAW support? Someone managed to hack into it?

Yes a hack for RAW output on the F31 would really be useful!

Anyone still trying to build a "custom firmware" here?
Is there another place or forum where someone did a FW mod on the F30?
I'm an owner of the F30 and a Auto ISO800 would be the only thing I miss!
Btw. the F31fd has that kind of option!

Hello,
There is an error in the comments.
The Fuji F30 has an lock focus, but it's really hard to find:
It's the fireworks mode. Here the camera lock the focus to infinite.
This is really useful.
A fully manual focus I only see interesting for expermiental fotography.
Here is also a fully manual mode ok. But not the primary issue for a compact camera.
The same with the infinite open sutter for star-exposures.
Best regards, roger
