hacking Fuji Finepix S5000 to get slower shutter speed

I'm interested in whether anybody out there is hacking the flash os of their digital cameras. One area I'm very interested in shutter speeds. Some of the lower end high optical zoom cameras have restrictions on the slower shutter speeds. For example, the Fuji Finepix S5000 is limited to 2 seconds, reducing its capability for night and low light photography to almost nil.

Anybody interesting in tackling projects like these?
