If anyone is trying to hack an e-pl1 they may do well to compare the code with an e-p3. Some things are different and may just be options. The degree of magnified view can be selected for instance. Touch screen though so overall is very likely to be different or may be another option.
What these cameras all badly need though is image stabilisation when focusing. They don't even with oly lenses on, just for a split second when the shutter button is half pressed. The period may be a bit longer on the e-p3. I did wonder if the mechanism was too fragile for prolonged use but then realised it's on all the time in video. This makes me think it's been crippled on purpose.

The video image stabilization is a digital image stabilization, not using sensor shift, afaik. In my E-Pm2 it seems to be this way, anyway. I guess it's because of the audible noise caused by sensor shift.
Why it's not working pre-exposure, I don't know. Maybe it's some consideration (battery, durability, optimum performance) or, quite likely as well, just a case of the firmware/software being retarded - nothing new here. I doubt it was crippled on purpose. It's enough crippled without trying :-D
