modifying the MASD-1?

I was wondering if anyone who has purchased the new SW 1030 camera (or similar) has thought of simply cutting off the extra tab on the micro-sd card adaptor to make it fit exactly the same as a normal XD card.
I also wonder if this "hack" will then make the camera think that the MASD-1 is a true olympus card, and enable the "panorama", "3d picture" and "art effects" features on the camera - which by the way aren't available unless a true olympus XD card is used.
Has anyone tried this? Enabling these features would be the only reason I would try doing this, but I am worried about rendering the card adaptor useless - meaning I will need to go out and actually buy a XD card after all.

Don't cut the tab off. It won't work in the camera if you do...tried it...and now when it's in..the camera keeps telling me there's an error with the memory card.

thanks for the advice. after reading around for a bit people tell me that the drivers used to read and write SD and XD cards are completely different. Therefore, that tab is simply there to tell the camera to use the SD set of drivers when reading and writing the card. I guess if you cut the tab off the camera then tries to use the XD drivers to read an SD card, which of course would end up with an error.
Oh well, no Panorama for me. Just do it on the computer with something like autostitch instead. Any good ones for the Mac that work like autostitch by the way?
Thanks for the comment Jeffery

So, in other words, the MASD-1 will work only in the cameras that come with it?
I thought that I could use the adapter in my (well, not so) old Olympus.

Thanks for the info... I was wondering if cutting the tab would work too... good thing I checked... I'll have to stick with Panorama Factory then...

Isn't it disastrous, disadvantageous and silly of Olympus NOT to make this masd-1 adapter compatible with ALL their digital cameras that uses the xD card?

Their first blunder was the SmartMedia card which rendered excellent P&S cameras like the C3020, 3030s useless.

They migrated from Smartmedia to xD. And then now, realizing that the xD did not suit well with the market, finally thought of an adapter YET limiting it to just their new models.

With the way Olympus is developing its cameras to use these silly cards in a very limited manner actually makes them even more unattractive.

They should have just taken the short route and follow what Fujifilm has done: create a double card slot that accepts both SD and xD cards. simple as that! That is since this masd-1 just wont be useful to the older digital cameras from Olympus anyway!!!

Honestly, getting a xD card is not all that painful if you know where to look. You can actually order a 2GB M+ for less than $30 from Newegg.

Whoops pressed enter too soon. But yeah, the Panorama mode is actually pretty neat but you have to be REALLY accurate to get it looking well. The few times I tried it out the edges of the different sections ended up blurring up and misaligning. Still, for the added functionality $25 isn't too much of a loss.

Aaron, have you tried your hacked MASD-1 card in a older olympus camera? I have a Olympus 790 SW, and I would LOVE to be able to use micro SD cards.

Remember xD was once had the smallest dimensions of any of the memory cards. It's part of the SmartMedia family and while it's popularity has waned over the years, once that format had as bright of a future as SD. I think even brighter at first. Olympus through in with that camp and probably for the benefit of their existing customers they kept with their chosen standard.
They're giving a strong nod to the SD world by including the ability to write to xD and MicroSD cards in their new cameras; they can't very well add that in old cameras (actually, maybe they can. Seems like you can do a lot w/ firmware upgrades).

The thing that would be really nice is a a true xD-MicroSD adapter.
An xD shaped adapter with a slot for holding a MicroSD card and the built in logic to translate from xD to MicroSD.
I mean, the iExplore guys are making SD cards with actual Wifi radios (!!!) built into them, I'd imagine building a xD-SD translator into an xD adapter would be possible.

I folks,

I've just to buy a Olympus FE-370, for $ 140 + tax in BestBuy. In my humble opinion, a good buy, 5X optical zoom and 8 megapixels is so cheaper for that price.
One of the facts that led me to buy it was the feature "microSD card compatible".
However, I think that the main problem with the MASD-1 is not panorama function. The real pain is the limitation of VGA video capture up to 10 seconds only. Really it's a shame. I've got a microSD of 4 GB for 11 bucks, for store videos of 10 seconds each on it, it's almost a crime.

Guys, just to clear a few things up: I purchased A MU-Tough 6000 Olympus Camera and there was a olympus sticker in the box recommanding to purchase XD memory because of compatibility and its 3d and art effects additional functions.
I purchased the 2GB XD card at around twice the price of the MicroSDHC 4GB ultra fast card.
First of all: the 3D and art functions are unlocked in the Olympus Master 2 software which actually needs to be updated with some piece of software. This addon software couldn't be found on the web, I had to call Olympus support to get them to send me a link to the installation program.
These addon 3D and Art functions are NOT available on the camera, only by using the panorama function on the camera and the processing in Olympus master software.
Unfortunately, it seems there is no manual available on how to use the 3D functionnality properly.
I dropped the XD card and purchased the MicroSDHC 4GB card and to my great surprise found out that the transfer speed is MUCH higher!
I suspect Olympus is pushing its old XD card technology by using very light marketing methods.

It may be possible to format the CIS header file information on a microSD card to enable the panoramic function.

How do you do that? I thought is only possible from SM cards.....

It doesn't work, it doesn't even plug into the camera and the memory card reader, I feel like a waste of money buying it. At least I can buy a 2gb XD card for a pretty cheap price, maybe the seller doesn't know its value
