Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 Digital Camera

Panasonic's Lumix G1 was the first Micro Four Thirds camera but surprisingly lacked a movie mode even when the Micro Four Thirds spec supported video recording. The recent PMA held at Las Vegas saw Panasonic introduce its newer and superior version of the G1 – the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1 digital camera.

The GH1 camera addresses the limitation of the G1 in style - with 1080i video at 24 frames per second, and 720p video at 60 frames per second. It measures 4.88 inches in length and 3.29 inches in height with a width of 1.78 inches – very similar to the G1 version in its appearance and fits well in both small hands and large. The back of the camera reminds one and all again of the G1 camera except for the red button on the top right corner which is used for video recording. It has an in-built stereo microphone for better video recording. The GH1 comes in black, red and gold colors and has a very well sculpted body.

The Panasonic Lumix GH1 features a 14 MP Live MOS Sensor, although effectively, it is 12.10MP. The 3 inch LCD screen moves away from the body of the camera and can be rotated up and down, allowing pictures to be taken easily from overhead or a lower angle. "A 1,440,000-dot equivalent" is what the company boasts of about its viewfinder, which is the same as in the G1 as well.

The flash appears high above the camera body and the intensity of the flash can be adjusted 2EV in 1/3EV increments. They have also provided a hot shoe on top of the camera incase external flash has to be added.

The GH1 provides different modes to shoot pictures and videos. The auto mode, unlike other companies, uses Panasonic's Intelligent Auto system to understand what is in the frame and adjust the settings accordingly.

The Movie Mode is the newest addition to this product and the GH1 is expected to shoot in two different high definition modes which are 1080i (1920 x 1080 resolution) at 24 frames per second and 720 p (1280 x 720 resolution) at 60 frames per second. This mode would record sound using Dolby stereo sound and can be stored in AVCHD files. More details on this mode are not available as the camera is still work-in-progress and the pre-release camera would not give a complete idea about this mode.

Other modes include the playback mode, drive/burst mode and a variety of settings that facilitate better pictures on the camera.

The biggest question about the Panasonic Limux DMC-GH1 is its price and the ship-date. The company has not mentioned these two important specifics which keep us wondering about the viability of the product. The G1 was priced at $800 and the market experts expect the GH1 to be priced between $ 1200 - $ 1600.

On the whole, the Panasonic Limux DMC-GH1 is a fully loaded camera that is sure to bring out the best in all the pictures that are shot with it.

Title: Panasonic gh1 camera
Weblog: Camera Hacker
Excerpt: I want to travel LIGHT. I thought the Lumix gh1, which shoots stills and HD video would be the answer. Let me say first it is a beautifully constructed camera. Great for stills, but I found out that for shooting video it is terrible. Even with stabilization the videos are shaky. Then try zooming, . . .
