I have had this Sony Digital Camera for 4 years. For the first time I have had a power up problem. I tried to power on the camera in the "Shoot" mode. However all I hear is whirring sound as if it is trying to turn the camera on. Usually when you turn on the camera the lens cover opens up and the the lens zooms in and out and then you are ready to shoot. However none of this happens. But if I put my camera mode on playback / edit mode and then power up I can see the images in the memory stick. I can also see that the battery is fully charged. I have never had to change the battery in the 4 years I have had this camera. Does any one know how to fix this problem without having to share my limited wealth with a Sony service centre. I have tried reseting the camera too. Help please

Your lens is jammed; it needs to be either replaced or adjusted. We can fix it a lot of the time without parts, feel free to contact me!

Our DSC-P10 was dropped onto concrete a couple years ago. Dented the control knob, split the body, disturbed the lens assembly. I fiddled with the lens mechanism, gently tapping it while power-cycling, and black-taped the body back together. It works, after a fashion -- but not when cold. Press the power button when the P10 is cold, and the lens motor just grinds the lens in and out, until I must remove the battery for a reset. The P10 must be kept in a warm pocket until it reaches operating temperature.
