DSCP72 Model PROBLEM!

I bought this model just a little over 3 months ago and brought it to Europe with me. It worked fine throughout the rigorous 6 weeks of picture-capturing usage. However, after about 3 weeks when I brought it back home it "broke".

PROBLEM: Although the camera turns on when I set the mode to "set-up" or "playback", the camera automatically shuts off when I put the mode to "camera" or "movie". I'm guessing anything that involves having the lens move out.

Would anyone happen to have a suggestion/solution? Even if you do not know I would greatly appreciate reference to someone who may!!

Sounds like your lens is stuck, or a gear is mis-aligned . . . how about trying to nudge the lens a little bit, while it's turning on. It could make it better or worse, but since it's already not working, you don't have much to lose. Let us know how it works out . . .

I also have the same problem with my Sony DSC-P72 Cybershot....PROBLEM: Although the camera turns on when I set the mode to "set-up" or "playback", the camera automatically shuts off when I put the mode to "camera" or "movie". I'm guessing anything that involves having the lens move out.

do you maybe know if the firmware is available anywhere on the internet?

Have you found a solution yet?

I had the same problem, then I figured out it is because your power supply is not strong enough. Because the machine uses higher power ampere than normal battery. Try to use the original battery with power charged full.

But I am having c:13:01 problem, does anyone know how to solve it?

I've found that as well as the above problem my camera sometimes turns itself off after I've pressed to shoot button, therefore leaving the lens open.

Hi,
I have exactly the same problem as Jamie has.

I have a Sony Cybershot DSC P 93 camera. Yesterday, when i was taking pictures, it suddenly turned off. I tried reinserting the batteries. after 3-4 tries, Camera was on and it asked to set the date and time. Then after taking 2 snaps, it turned off as before leaving the lens projected outside. Now the power is not turining on. Any clues ?

I have had the same problems as mentioned above. I found that once I replaced the batteries with new rechargables (versus being lazy and using cheap-o throw-aways) the camera stayed on.

I am now getting C:13:01 error and think it's a result of me getting ansy with a file error and deleting said file manually while using the camera. So I am thinking that I am going to lose the 10 or so pictures and will need to invest in a new memory card? Any other ideas? I am going to take it to a photo developer and see if I can at least get to the pictures that way...

change your batteries. i had the same problem, and replacing the worn-out batteries with new ones did the trick. sometimes this is an issue with improperly-charged supplied nicads, so i now almost exclusively use alkalines.

good luck!

I wanted to thank you guys for this advice. I, too, have been having problems with the camera turning on only on the "set up" and "playback" modes. I called the Sony company last night. The dippy representative went through a brief diagnostic check and then told me I had to send the camera in to be repaired and that it would cost $100. So I went to two local camera stores who didn't even bother to look at my camera. They also said it needed fixing and that it would be costly. I lost my job two years ago. I am trying to eke out a living by doing mystery shopping and selling on EBay. Both of which require a digital camera. So, in desperation, I did an internet search and came across this website. I am so glad that I did. All I can say is thank you. This site saved me from being taken to the cleaners!!! You see, my rechargeable batteries had died on me, and I was in the middle of a job. So I tried some cheap batteries that only cost $1.99. I would have never guessed it could be the batteries until I came to this site. This is something that that stupid Sony representative should have known but didn't.

I've had my DSC-P72 for over 3 years, and I've had battery/powering-off problems like those mentioned here. My rechargeable NiCad batteries seems to have lost their ability to hold a charge for very long, so I switched over to regular duracell or energizer alkaline batteries. here's what I discovered: regular AA alkalines work pretty good, but the low battery light still comes on after maybe 30 or 40 shots. I went on a 1 week trip, and went through probably 4 sets of AA's, and I was so mad that when I got home, I bought a battery tester. I was not surprised one bit to find that each AA battery still had 80% of its charge left. So there is something DEFINITELY wrong with the internal battery sensors in the circuitry. I can't seem to find any other explanation... the camera is somehow fooling you when it tells you the batteries are dead. They're not!

Somethins similar happened to me few weeks ago. Internal battery, keeping settings, date and time alive, has probably died, and from then,
- cam drains 8-9mA from the acumulators in turned-off state (=> within few days of not using the cam, batteries are empty)
- the power needs of the cam have somehow risen - most of my older NiMHs are from then unusable, when turning on in take pics mode, the cam turn off just in the peak state when trying to turn on display AND CCD chip
- when the cam is few minutes left without batteries, settings & date+time is resetted:-/

I've been using mine for quite a long time. It is definitely the battery thing. My camera starts acting dysfunctional after about an hour -- this is with a duracell battery made for digital cameras. I've gotten used to it, so I've gotten large packs of AA batteries.

My advice is to always have at least two pairs of extra batteries at hand.

it is great that people can share the same issue and find single set of batteries as a problem. i bought a set of Nickel-metal hydride batteries and they are perfect, since they can be charged with Sony's standard charger. obviously after 3-4 years original cyber-shot power supply simply died, so go ahed and replace it.

Exact same problem here, make damn sure you use alkalines, and make sure that they still have some juice. Definately check both before you go throwing hundreds down for a 'repair'.
