I picked up my 717 to ready it for some holiday pictures, did a recharge and the image in the viewfinder is one that is distorted...looking like an xray type image. I can capture it as a digital photo. (see attached)
On the memory board are regular pictures than I can call up in the viewfinder and they appear as they should...not distortion?
Any suggestions?

Hey Tom,
I have the same camera model and just discovered this issue a few days ago. Sony made a bunch of cameras with a bad CCD (the part of the camera that is used to receive the image from the lens). Go to Sony eSupport - Electronics - Important Notice About Your Sony Product for free repairs.

Thanks Tom for bringing this up and thanks Tony for giving the accurate feedback... I picked up my camera for the Holiday as well and thought my kids did something to damage the lens due to the distorted image... I have the exact same issue as the picture example and almost went to Circuit City to pick-up another camera.. Thanks a bunch for the info!!!! You saved me $$$$$$.

THANK GOD, I found this site! My camera went on the fritz today and I nearly cried. It was a gift and 1,000 bucks at the time (lot cheaper now) so I was really bummed when it died on me. Thanks so much for sharing.

I thought the camera was posessed... now that I found out that it is no freak occurrance, I am somewhat saddened. I'm actually considering NOT sending my camera back - it takes some really freaky photos!
If this CCD damage happens to anyone else (before October 2007 - that's when the free repair period ends) I say take a week and take some shots around the house. Repeating patterns are the best. Different light sources.
Try the nightshot with some friends... Ee-frickin-rie! With the glowing eyes and distortion... fun!
Anyway, thanks for this info. Now I have options.
