If you're currently shopping for a new camera, perhaps the biggest difference you'll notice about the Sony's new Alpha DSLR A380 camera is their move toward simplicity and affordability. Although the A380 still has many features of its predecessor, it's even more improved with the revamped size, shape and weight.
As mentioned, the A380's new design is meant to have much-improved ease of use. You won't find as many buttons to confuse users seeking simplicity; Sony has adjusted the function menu and the display status making shot preparation much faster. It also looks great. It's clearly more modern looking and more “Sony-like” than older styles.
The lens is a 18-55mm lens (and all other Sony Alpha lenses may also be mounted to it). The camera's other features include a 14.2 megapixel CCD sensor with an advanced Live View function (meaning there aren't irritating delays), ISO 100-3200 sensitivity, 9-point AF (center cross-type), and compatibility for dual slot SD cards and memory sticks, to name a few.
The LCD monitor will tilt up or down allowing users to shoot from various angles whether they're high or low-position; and the SteadyShot function greatly aids in correcting for shaking hands if you're not using a tripod. You'll enjoy clear and sharp images free from any hint of motion. Its processor is the BIONZ and allows a very quick response time, enabling 2.5 frames per second (and 2 frames per second when it's set in Live Mode).
Another special feature is the Graphic Display. With this, it's easier to see and understand what shots will look like; by displaying how the aperture and shutter speed will affect the final photo, users can make adjustments to capture the look they're seeking. Additionally, the mode dial (located on top of the A380) provides six scene selection options and example photos; choose an interface and one of four available background colors. Of course there's a Help Guide for questions too.
At the time of writing, there weren't user reviews available. However, test shots taken with the camera that will be released were clear, high-quality, extraordinary examples of what to expect from Sony's newest offering.
Although the $849 price is a big high for those simply snapping photos of friends at a barbeque or of pets chasing butterflies, it's a great price for the photographer looking to take his work to the next level (and some predict that cheaper prices will be available soon after its release next month (July 2009). Therefore, novices and semi professionals alike should fine this new model's features beneficial in producing great shots.
