Sony Alpha NEX-3 Review

Sony came with this entry-level model of its all new mirror-less interchangeable lens camera system. This was set out in competition with its Panasonic and Olympus rivals who also came up with their own Micro Four Thirds mirror-less systems. The Alpha NEX-3 comes in three different colors – Red, Black and White (Silver). The camera is designed with professional quality photos and video in mind and achieves it easily with its large 14.2 Megapixel APSC sensor. This literally translates to extreme depth of field control, the ability to shoot perfect pictures in low-light conditions and stunning detail, all packed into half the size and half the weight of most DSLR cameras available in the market today.

The NEX-3 features interchangeable lenses which enable the user to switch the lens as per his/her needs depending of the type of picture about to be photographed. The camera comes bundled with either a wide angle 16mm pan kit or a variable 18 to 55mm zoom lens. Both the lenses are of exceptional quality, built with metal parts and perfect dampening and zooming capabilities. Of course a whole new set of lenses are bound to be available in the market for the NEX-3 in the future. The camera is simple designed for simplicity and can be placed in the point-and-shoot category. It features Sony's “intelligent auto mode” which uses tons of algorithm and calculations to judge the amount of light present in the background and also the type of subject present within the frame. This enables even an amateur to click professional quality photos without breaking a sweat. Within the intelligent auto mode, users get to control a new option termed ߵbackground defocus' which enables to slide through the amount of depth present on the subject and in the background thereby creating high-res pictures.

Along with this, there are many more options such as aperture priority, shutter priority, complete manual control and much more. The Alpha series seems to include many of Sony's Cybershot features among which the highlights would be sweep panorama and hand-held twilight mode. Sweep panorama outputs a 23 Megapixel 226 panoramic photo which is mind-boggling. While this creates the perfect panoramic wide-angle shot, Hand-held twilight mode helps the user to shoot a crisp and detailed low-light shot without the use of a flash or a tripod with extreme low noise. Besides perfect photographts, the NEX-3 also captures perfect 720p HD videos with stunning quality and less shake effects. This is a new category of camera with the high end quality of a DSLR with the form factor of a point and shoot camera.
