Sony Alpha NEX-3 or NEX-5?

What's the difference between NEX-3 and NEX-5?
Which one is best for creating a shallow depth of field?

I'm not sure what's different between the NEX-3 and the NEX-5. I think only the video quality differs. Otherwise, they are pretty much identical.

It's not the camera that does changes the depth-of-field. It's the lens. You'll want the 18-200mm lens and use it at the 100 to 200 mm range. The depth is shallowest at 200mm.

I was looking at the rebel yesterday. For that kind of money, might ad well go with a regular Dslr, no?

What you trade-off in style, you gain in function. You decide.

The NEX-3 and NEX-5 has style, which I wrote in "Unique and Unconventional Looking Digital Cameras". The EOS definitely have function.

I noticed that the 60D on Amazon is a very good deal; $1000 for the body. And I would suggest the Canon 28-135mm IS lens for $500.

The NEX-3 and NEX-5 with a 18-200mm lens is probably a better travel camera. If you hardly travel, then the 60D is better for you.

The FujiFilm FinePix HS10 is also an awesome travel camera, without the style nor all the functionality. But with a 24-720mm zoom lens, you'll have really shallow depth-of-field. My review: FujiFilm FinePix HS10

There is only one 18-200mm lens for this camera:
Sony Alpha SEL18200 E-mount 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS Lens (Silver)

No. Most photographers knows that good lenses cost more than cameras. And as you asked, what lens will get you the blurred background. And that's this lens. It's not the camera.

But as I mentioned before, if you are cost-conscious, you should consider the FujiFilm FinePix HS10 for $499. It's got a zoom lens that is 3.5x more magnification than this Sony lens. So you'll get plenty of blurred backgrounds.

However, don't count on being as stylish with this FujiFilm as you can be with the Sony. And don't count on this $499 combination beating the $1000 60D and the $500 28-135mm lens in term of image quality and performance.

You practically get what you paid for.

Canon EOS Rebel T2i 18 MP CMOS APS-C Digital SLR Camera with 3.0-Inch LCD and EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens

does this come with everything I need? I'll just get the lense later or something. it can do more and it's only $70 more.

Yes. The 200mm focal length, on the Nikon Coolpix P7000 will provide more shallow depth-of-field than its 28mm focal length. However, I suspect that this camera has a small sensor, so it will not have as shallow depth-of-field as the Sony NEX-3 and NEX-5, with an APC-sized sensor, at 200mm focal length.

I think the Canon T2i camera body is sufficient and plenty good for. However, the 18-55mm lens will not provide the shallow depth-of-field that you are looking for. You'll need the 28mm-135mm IS lens at a minimum. I say save your money and get the Canon T2i body only. And purchase the Canon EF 28-135mm IS lens along with the body.
