Sony Cybershot DSC-P92 LCD & Picture Capture Problems

Hi,

I have been using DSC-P92 for 3 years now and it has worked like a charm! However, recently I started having the problem of dark strip lines on the LCD (during viewfinding) and also the captured shots have the same problem. It more seems like a refresh rate problem of CCD. Any clues on what could be done?

I tried replacing the batteries and the problem has nothing to do with the battery aging.

Can a firmware upgrade help me get over this problem? If so, where can I find such a peice of code?

Help in this regard is greatly appreciated!!

Almost similar problem for my 3 year old P92 also. However if switch on and off the screen (screen alone not camera), the picture stabilizes.

Plan to give this to a sony service center. Please let me know if your problem got corrected.

Add one more to the mix..I've had mine for just under three years and it's been perfect until a couple weeks ago, where I'm having the same problems described above. Black strips at top and bottom of LCD and odd flickers across the screen. Any advice?

I have had the same problem, lines across the lcd screen which also appear on the picture and more recently a large amount of distortion.
The problem does get better the longer I leave the camara turned on.
I've had my camera for about three years now.

What do ya know... Me too. I've had my p92 for about 3 years also and the LCD screen is acting up just like you all have said. Fuzzy blurry image, distortion of reds and blues. Pictures come out the same way. Funny thing is though, it can display a picture taken while it was properly functioning just fine. I'm guessing the problem lies between the lens and the display. If anyone figures this out, please let us know.

Count me in too. I've had mine for about three years and about a week ago it stopped focusing. The pics come out fuzzy and smeared. In addition, 'image size' presents distance numbers in meters, not sizes in bytes. I've tried everything to get this thing to focus again, and am about to open it with a philips head. An example picture is included. I am very disappointed with Sony - the battery on my laptop gave up the ghost in less than 6 months. No more Sony for me. (Thanks for the phone number though!! I will call them.)

I just called Sony and the whole thing was painless and successful. Hoorrah! Some troubleshooting was done over the phone and in the end a work order number was generated to have the camera fixed for free. Excellent.

Any camera owners who had success with the free fix? How is your camera operating now?

Is this repair only for a certain model of sony or for all the ones that have the lines on the screen?

Hey, i'm having somewhat the same problem with my sony camera. What's funny is that i had taken some pictures the day before it started happening and had no problem . Now looking through the view finder or screen the picture is fine no problems once i take the picture it comes out blurry. I've tried to change the memory stick but that's not the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The problem is in the CCD , seems to have a conection problem after some period of time. Whatever they used to bond the conection has failed do to age.The fix is free and the shipping is free. Not just for cameras either, so do some research if you have other items with simular problems

Taylor posted this message and I called the number.

"There is a fix for this just do a google shearch. Sony is aware of the problem and will repair the camera up till October 2nd 2006.
call 1-866-703-7669"

Sony emailed me a shipping label with instructions on how to package the camera, and within two weeks the camera was back - repaired. I was not told it was the bonding of the CCD. Good to know.

The repair is apparently free for anyone who has had this camera. I'd call and ask what the story is with foreign owners.

Here is a picture to show the results of the repair.

Great Information.
I had the "white screen" problem and was told this was a recall on this Sony digital camera, so the fix would be free.
Thanks for the phone number!
I love the internet :)

I was having the same problems with my camera and sent it back to sony last week. They did tell me on the phone that it would be repaired free of charge but I have received a receipt in the post today for the camera with a page of charges listed. Now I dont know if they are charging me or not. Will phone them tomorrow to confirm. Hope they dont. They are saying it is £114 plus VAT and carriage.

Hi Marin,

Did you check with SONY on the situation for foreign owners? I bought my camera in Europe and live in Europe. I did send a mail to SONY on this. Will post the results here.

Thanks!

I bought my P92 camera in the UK and it started to have these same problems last weekend. The following UK Sony web page provides the UK contact details (also below). I'll be calling them later today.
It also provides a list of other cameras affected.

I also had the problem, got the free repair, but now camera cannot focus. it focuses only at far distances and with max zoom. i also noticed that the AF illuminator is not that bright. i'm returning it back for repair, but it'll be very lame of them to charge me money for that repair...

I purchased the P-72 for my daughter in Dec. 2004. She is at college and I saw her camera this weekend. It has the same problem-the display goes to a blank grey white, or it might flicker like a bad TV, yet the camera still shoots a photo using the viewfinder only. Turning the display on and off works sometimes, but it's too frustrating to be a reliable camera. She noticed the problem a month ago, and I just saw it today. I'm wondering, will the Sony recall still be available for me when I call them tomorrow? Nothin' like seeing a deadline four days after it ends... Thanks for the info on this site.

I had this BLURRY picture problem for a long time. I thought that this may be the nature of ALL digital cameras and had lost confidence in Digital cameras.

Now that I know this is a SONY problem, I'm going ask SONY for REPLACING my Camera (not just repairs).

They let me down when I wanted to capture my precious moments. What a Shame, SONY !

Thanks to Richard F @ 5th Oct. When I rang Sony, they asked me to checked whether if we upload the photo on a computer, it stays distorted and whether if I back load any proper image, it appears non distorted. These two checks verifies if its something wronge with the CCD and nothing else, which qualifies us for the free repair. Good one.

For all the international sony camera users, there has to be a number to call in the respective countries to get hold of Sony Center Service. Give them a ring, they are really nice about this particular issue.

Similar issue with my Sony. My wife continually complains about blurry images. I assumed it was a digital camera issue not just my camera.

My DSC-P10 has the same problem. Sony will fix until OCT 2007.

This is great news as I like this little camera and don't want to buy more stuff.

Seems like there was a class action settlement for this problem. You can check if it applies to your camera.

"Me too" on my DSC-P92--same green flare. The issue cropped out in the field in Europe. Lots of ruined images, QQ.

One thing I noticed: The effect seemed to show itself after switching from image review mode to shoot mode without turning off the power. Powering up into shoot mode seemed to avoid it. Later it went bad altogether.

The attached example [Svatého Mikuláše, Malá Strana, Praha] shows an odd lateral pixel-shifting I got along with the unusally bright lime color halo time. (Imaged cropped for size.)

For my fellow Canadians, Sony Canada offers a free fix of this problem too. If you go through their service site, you won't get anywhere. The U.S. site will give you a run-around too. I spent a long time looking for it, but here is the place you go When the product is used in camera mode, the liquid crystal display (LCD) panel and/or electronic viewfinder displays either a distorted image or no image at all. . Then scroll to the bottom and click on the link and find a service centre near you. I guess we need to bring our cameras into the service centre. Actually may be better bec. it could be faster.

My sony camera's LCD did somethin weird a week ago after only buying it a year ago. The pictures had all these funny 'saturated colour fuzzies" (only way i know how to describe it), on the LCD, BUT this has gone now, and hasnt come back. and electronics guy said taht this can happen... Has this happend to anyone? I have sold it now as it was working perfectly, but jst hope it doenst happen again to the next user.

My son (then age 8) purchased a Sony Cybershot S40 in late November or early December 2005. We found this website when his screen went "white" on the 1st of July (2007). I followed the links to Sony's Web page, contacted them on Monday morning. The camera spontaneously came back on as I was explaining the problem to the Sony rep. He had me reset the camera, following his directions. It worked for 2 weeks, but has gone "white" again. I contacted Sony, which informed me this particular model was not covered (even though an almost identical camera is. The symptoms are identical). I further complained and was eventually connected with an American Customer Service agent ("George" in Ft. Myers, FL) who explained that the number on the camera doesn't exactly match the cameras on the list of the Class Action settlement ( S.D. Cal. District COurt, Case. 05CV 1979-JAH-RBB-- Federal Dist. Ct.) so I could pay to have it fixed, or I could write to:

Sony Electronics, Attn: Executive Review Committee, 12451 Gateway Blvd, Ft. Myers, FL 33913 and request they repair it anyway (or replace it)!
This is exactly the problem described and pictured on the Sony site! Sony has apparently taken the position that it's too bad if your camera isn't listed, even for a known defect in the same time period. They also request proof of purchase (date)via original receipt if you have it. We don't have the receipt, but as my son was 8, we purchased an extended service plan beginning 30 days after purchase, for 1 year. I do have that. Hopefully, that is good enough.

I will write to them, but if I do not get an appropriate response and action, I for one will never buy another Sony product and I will be certain to let the camera chain that sold my son the camera what has transpired. I will also post results here. Good Luck to all.

Yeah, I bought on of these lemon, too! The DSC-P-92 never did work right from day one and all I get upon exposure is a picture of a blank, black square. Anybody know what causes this problem? I suspect its the setting of exposure or some related kink. Would appreciate some 'public' help rather than deal with SONY. I'll never buy from them ever again!

I have a DSC-P92 for over 3 years. However, recently I found that when I turned it on I wouldn't get any image in the view finder and the lens would not open fully. The lens now wont open or close. Any one have a similar problem or know how to fix it?

Cheers
