My camera Sony DSC-F717 shows a black screen on the LCD and same thing on the finder. I can see old picutres so its not the screen itself, But when i try to take a picture nothing shows up. Do you know what could be causing this.

My camera does not show a black screen but rather a few areas on the picture that are black. Could the CCD be damaged?
Thanks

HOW TO GET YOUR SONY CAMERA REPAIRED IN THE UK if CCD Chip (Black screen)
I just found the suitable number to phone within the UK: 08705111999
Apparently you have to box the camera up without any of it's accessories (no battery, mem stick, filter etc.)
Note that if have original box this would be the best means of posting. However one chooses to box it,
ensure that it's suitably packed as this could affect your ability to recieve compensation from Sony if it's damaged in transit
Include a covering leter with UK return address, your contact number, and a description of the problem.
You can also print out this page explaining the issue from www.sony.co.uk
Digital Imaging announcement - Notice to Owners of Sony Digital Still Camera, Camcorder, PDA CLIÉand Professional Camcorders & Cameras
You will see that they offer free reapir to the owners fo applicable products.
Pack up the camera and take it to a post office, and ask for a certificate of posting (receipt from Royal mail)
This should arrive at the service centre in 5 days, you shall get a letter to advise of receipt of it
It should be returned 10 days or so afterwards.
If the problem isn't the CCD CHip, Sony will contact you to advise of repairs + cost.
Send the package to the following Address:
Sony Central Service Freepost
RLTU-ELJJ-RERD
Pencoed
CF25 5HZ
Let's see if I get it back in one piece, and working....

Sent mine out and SONY sent out document to say it landed with them on 22nd Aug, have just phoned up and they said that it will take 15 working days to get sorted. Which pushes it back to 19th Sept.
I have to admit that turnaround is fairly pathetic for a company of SONY's reputation. I expect better, as have little kids, family over seas, and no way of capturing memories. ;)
Have also found that my SONY handy cam flick out screen is starting to loose it's colour, after about 3 years. Built in obsolescense, is a crime.

Mine crapped out (blank screen) last week while I was on vacation in North and South Dakota. Wasn't going to miss out on taking pictures so I bought a Nikon D80. I still want to get the Sony F717 fixed - I liked some of the features and I have alot of money tied up in accessories for this camera.

Have today recieved my camera back from sony, who have repaired it free of charge,it took 3 weeks which is not too bad, interestingly when I phoned sony customer service they did,nt say anything about the black screen issue until I mentioned that I had seen the issue on the internet and then they agreed to repair it for free,so if you phone don,t expect them to be very forthcoming with info it is up to you to bring up the matter.

Glad to have stumbled across this forum. My Sony F717 just got the same problem tonight. Very strange problem. Visited the link provided on this forum and found they even had an image of the screen, showing this problem exactly. I've submitted the information and they say they will forward mailing instructions soon. I'm very hopeful (and happy) this seems like the solution, and free of charge as well! Also glad to see that it didn't take too long to get it back. I use my camera very frequently and don't like to be without it. Thanks again ffor this great thread that identified this problem very quickly.

All F717 is on recall by sony.
It took a court order for them to fix it.
They knew of the problems and didn't want the information to leak out to the public.
They will loooooooose lots of money.
Go to sony.com website and find the recall page.
Take them all back. They sold you crappy camera.

Had this same issue myself just now, however i plugged it in to the charger to charge the battery so i could use it in my other camera, had the camera cradled in my left hand with the lense pointing up, went to turn it on again hoping the problem had fixed itself or that it was battery related and received a really serious eletrical shock which has made the cam no longer power on, and given me a really nasty burn where i got zapped, looking closer the burn mark lines up perfectly with the lower screw under the lense arm... contacted sony through the email contact form thingy since its too late to phone right now, explained what just happened.. think they'll fix my camera?
man i can't beleive this, my hands stinging like hell right now :(

I live in Belgium and I bought my F717 in July 2004. The diagnosis is exactly as described on
Sony eSupport - DSC-F717: Important Notice About Your Sony Product
So, I am very HAPPY that I discovered this webpage.
When I went to the Sony-Center (that's how the Sony shops in Belgium are called) in Wavre , they did NOT tell me that there is a known problem with the CCDs of these digital cameras.
I am very disappointed, as I have always been a loyal Sony product buyer. I expected the seller to be as loyal as I am.
On the Belgian Sony website, they mention that there is indeed a problem with the DSC-F717 cameras and that you can bring back the camera to the shop for free repair.
But, when calling the Sony support-center, at +32 70 222 130, the operator told me that it was far from sure that the problem with my camera was indeed related to the CCD.
I couldn't believe my ears : The diagnosis is identical to what is explained on the Sony website (USA version)... but still the operator is suggesting that there could be another problem with my camera.
If it would appear to be a problem that is not related to the CCD, Sony Belgium is going to charge me 230 EURO to repair my camera !!!
Anyhow, I will bring my camera to the Sony-store tommorow and see if they are ready to repair it for free ...

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
I stumbled on to this website, trying to find a manual or something to trouble shoot what was going on with my camera, to see if this was something I could fix or if I needed to take it in for repair. I've had it three years, love it and then suddenly it was black screen. Still appeared to take a picture, but because the camera only saw black screen, that is what my picture was making--a picture of a black screen. I followed the link to the web page, sent the email, got the UPS label, packed it and sent per directions on Dec 15. On Dec 23, they notified me that it was received. Today Dec 29, my camera was returned, repaired and no charges. Had I not found this website, I would have traveled 40 minutes to my local camera repair store to trouble shoot the problem, and then go from there. All while getting charged. Now my camera is repaired (CCD chip) at no cost. The downside is that my camera was out of circulation during christmas and had to rely on a pocket point and shoot sony digital, that doesn't make as good of pictures for all my Christmas this year. But otherwise very happy.

Went to a Christmas party 12/21 to find my DSC-F717 had decided not to work. Was REALLY bummed. Came home to find this post. Same problem I was having. Sent my camera off 12/30. I just received it back today 1/5 and is working great. I was impressed. Thank you Laredo, TX SONY repair unit. You did great! I hope I do not have this same problem in two - three years. By then it may be time for an upgrade anyway. Thank you everyone!!! Cheers!

Isn't the Web a great place? After my F717 showed the same problems as described on this page I was really getting worried. It was working well during Christmas and New Year, we forgot our camera at our friends house and when we got it back it showed this problem of unfocussed, strangely coloured and weird images. All older exposures were still there and perfect-- and all other functions seemed to work well (focus, zoom, night framing etc)!
So today, before opening the camera and trying to identify if there was a "mechanical problem (loose wire due to punch from falling down etc.) I searched the internet and I found this page. Thank you guys!
So I started to search Sony.de for repair information. And here it is for the Germans among you:
Wichtiger Hinweis - allgemein - Hinweis füitzer von Sony Digital Fotokameras
Calling the mentioned number: 0221-5372005, I got the following address to ship the camera to:
AVC Köln
"Sony-CCD-Chip"
Emil Hoffmann Str. 19a
50996 Köln
Tel: 02236-38380
They said that the repair would take 2-3 weeks and if the CCD wasn't the problem, they would send a quote.
Happy new year! I hope to have my camera soon back in working condition!

I have the 717. I am not getting any error codes but my camera has just decided not to take any more pictures. I downloaded the current pictures to my computer, deleted them off the memory stick via the computer, charged up the camera and when i went back to it all i have got is a black screen with the usual display stuff. It's as if the lens cap is still on (no, i am not that stupid). When you take a picture there it just comes out blank. Has anyone got any suggestions?
Thank you in advance.

Just got back from a 2nd trip to Thailand. Shot up a storm both times. Went to download some pictures and couldn't. Memory sitck downloads outside the camera fine.
Was checking out the camera and came up with this distorted screen, exactly as depicted in figure A on the Sony website you refer your readers to.
I filled out and sent in the form and am now waiting for the shipping instructions. Now we will see what happens.
I love this camera and was thinking of buying the newer 10meg model. If this pans out OK I just might buy it.
Thanks for the help.

Hi,
I was having the same problem with my camera which I had purchased in the US (am presently in India) and Sony India also repaired it free of cost for me. The class action lawsuit does not mention anything about the extending the replacement/repair to customers outside US but they did honour it.
It costs about Rs.7K-8K otherwise.

i have the same problem as HANS. The f717 has been a loyal friend for the past 4 years and now it's gone all evil on me. oh dom yea i think you have the same problem as the recall noted i would call the company and they should provide free shipping and repair. as i was told if it has any distortion or black screen it is a problem with the CCD and if so they will look into it and repair it for free, actuall i think your is just worst than mine. but i belive it has somthing to do with light sencitivity and heat on the CCD chip.

I'm also glad I found this info! I turned on my F717 tonight to find a black screen with lines running thru it. I also owned the F707 and have been pleased with both cameras. They have good glass and the macro mode is great! I made a lot of auction change with the Sony cameras. I also own a Nikon DSLR now but will always keep the F717 with a F1000 external flash for backup. Emailed Sony tonight and waiting for the follow up email. Hope the repair goes well and get a lot more use out of the F717!

Mon, 12 Mar 2007 07:06:27 -0800
i would call and see if they will replace the chip be sure to state the camera hasn't showed signs yet and be sure the camera falls under the recall policy think they do it by model # i'm sure if it meets the qualifications for replacement of the chip they will repair it for free if it was a newer model number it may have already been fixed. if worst comes to worst you can possibly force it to show signs of CCD damage it is rumored to be caused bu light sencitivity and heat IE: not putting the camera in the oven heat but leaving it in the sun and periodically checking it note the camera may have protection from this so check with the company to see if the model # match up to the limited numbers that have been reported to have CCD chip problems before the recall.

i'm sure it will start soon unless it is new don't know why the made it repairable only till October 2, 2007 but if it is going to act up i'm sure you got ebough time for the problems to start comming up but like i said it is a sencitivity issue so technically you can induce similar results as i posted above miner wasn't showing the black till after 2 weeks of the white scan lines appearing and they refused me because it didn;t show the images that where posted on the sony site. funny enough thats the time the issues started and mine had been repaired and should get it tomarrow free sahipping and free repairs, so don't belive what they say. they are only trying to set obsticals to protect there own interest below are some images my camera was showing as you see none of the problems my camera had even looked like there examples hope it works out for you all.

My camera hasn't been working for 6 months now. I didnt know Sony had a recall.
But not sure if camera can be repaired for free. The Image isnt the same as in Sony website its not even close.

Here is a pic of the image I get on the camera. Please let me know if this can be fixed for free or not.
Many Thanks,

I haven't used my camera for a few months because I had bought a Canon 20D. I pulled out my Sony F717 the other day only to notice it exhibited what picture DSC00021.JPG shows above. All of the pictures turn out white, like they are over exposed. I'm not sure how it could of happened, since it was stored in a controlled environment with stable conditions. Anyway, this is exactly the site I needed to see and the info was very helpful.
I have contacted Sony and hopefully my product will get taken care of.

OMG! Thanks so much because I was sure I had screwed up the camera. My wife is a freelance writer and I'm her photographer. The camera worked great for 3 years and then the black screen of death appeared.
Thanks for the Sony link. Am waiting for my shipping label email.

John i belive you are having a ccd chip issue as well, i know for a fact sony is hesitent in doing the free repairs my camera was over exposed at first then it started turning pink images then eventually it all went black so as long as the recall is valid you should be able to get it fixed think it ends in october 07 so you have time hope everyone can get there camera fixed luckily mine was fixed and works fine no shiping or anything as a matter of fact they emailed me the shipping lable all i paid for was packaging but even then i packed it in an old ebay action pakage so i guess that was free too.

Went to a drag racing event today, took about a dozen photos before my 717 produced the same problem.
First, I hoped that this was my excuse to buy a Sony Alpha - looks like I'll have to wait for that, now that I should be able to get it fixed for free.
I, like others posting here, really like this camera. This is my second Sony DSC - the first being a DSC-S50. Thankfully, my son wanted to take the S50 with him today, so we had a backup for the event.
The S50 is a great little 2MB digital camera, and actually produces much better low-light/night shots than the F717.
... Still want the Sony Alpha though - I have too much money invested in Minolta Maxxum/Dynax SLR accessories to pass this one up!

My Sony DSC-F717 Still Camera had the black screen in July of 2006 and I contacted Sony, they sent the UPS label, fixed it quickly and sent it back all free of charge. I was thrilled to have it back and up and running. My Sony camcorder DCR HC30 had a black screen this week and I contacted Sony once again and got a label to send it off. Am sure the service will be quick and easy once again.

My Sony cybershot camera is showing a complete white screen. I know it's not the memory card because when i put it in my computer it comes out clear. But when i turn on the camera it is completly blank..I've tried changing the battery, shipping it to Sony but the cost drove me back...

they tend to do that. don't let them discurage you it took me around 5 times calling different people before one told me that they only repair black distorted screens but my camera was showing a combination of white faded kinda scan lines making the image very white, they told me that it didn't meet the requirements for repair and it would cost me around 300 max to fix it. 2 weeks later my camera started having funny images in the lcd screen still not black distortion mind you but more of a pinkish distortion. but pics came out pinkish or scanned as before. i called again and started complaining about the service and the staffs knowlege of issues (lacking) and as i was talking to the rep she asked me to try a hard reboot (take the battery out) so i did for the 20th time and apon restart it went to a black screen and i told her she was iffity about it but sent me a free shipping lable to have it processed.
so i sent it in to the local sony repair place as described not very far about 5 hrs away but anyways i gave it 5 days and called and talked to the people that actually fix the cameras and asked if it was finished and they told me it was shipped out yesterday so i continued to ask if it had to be paid for and he asured me it was all fault of the CCD chip and it was repaired for free thank god it works fine.
later that day i called sony once again to see if the issues i had where related obviously they where or they would have informed me and billed me and her reply was she had no idea what is wrong with my camera and quickly tried to get me of the phone saying to go to sony web site and fill out a survay ???????? i don't get it whay was the question so hard to ansure and if not then why avoid the question. i belive these issues are related just they are trying to keep things from getting out of hand after all every free repair is a loss to them. also sony's tech support people don't have any idea. just ask for a lable they should provide that and send it in if the issue is other than the CCD you can have them not repair it and send it back. that was the option they gave me. thankfully it worked to my benifit. hope this helps all of you sorry for the long speach but I though this should be made public.

Thank you SO much Eddie et al for making me smile at the end of the sad day my camera died and - hopefully - saving me rather a lot of money! Can't believe Sony aren't giving this known fault prominence on their website - spent half an hour there earlier looking for help and came away none the wiser. Lovely camera (when it's working) Sony - but lousy PR...

We use ours at work. It's a great

My camera had the common problem of the screen going black. I sent it in for repair. When I got it back it worked for short period of time. All of a sudden it stopped working. The camera does not even power on.(sony DSC-F717)

Thank you very much for the information. I bought my Sony DSC717 in July 2003 in UK. All on a sudden the screen started showing only distorted images in March 2007. While I was not knowing what to do with this costly camera, the information on this site was a great helping hand. I got my camera back from the UK Sony service centre within 2 weeks and is working well.

hi i have a Sony Dsc-f717 and have the overly white flushed out photo syndrome. i have changed the battery and memory card and still the same. in video mode it works fine. i know you guys may not be experts but does it sound like the CCD problem to you and thus make me eligible for free repair. before finding this site i had emailed sony and they said it was 115 pounds to repair digital cameras and fifty pounds for beyond economial repair cost and gave me this blurb about checking night mode etc,etc-they didnt mention it was a common problem- think this is very deceitful of them. anyway enough talk, my question does it sound like i have the CCD problem??

Thanks to all the posters on this thread. Found My F717 with failed CCD, everything else working. Sent off to Sony UK today. Will post again if it returns... Just did a casual web search to see how common this problem is. I've had the camera from new and have registered it with Sony. I am a bit angry that they did not contact me and recall the camera before it failed.

This site is great. I just returned from 2 weeks in Mexico, totally pissed as my 717 exibited these problems of having a black screen and viewfinder but I could still review old pics on the memory stick. As soon as I got there and tried the camera, it was dead. It ruined my trip as I couldn't take any pics. I feel a bit better now knowing that this is a Sony problem and they will pay for it. I'm in Canada and I purchased the camera in 2001 but it should still be covered......right ?

Another one joining the flock! I turned on my camera today only to notice that there was no picture in the viewfinder. I find this so discouraging but thanks to Google and you guys, I found this page and the URL for canadian repairs. Thanks a million. I guess I'm gonna have to take some time off of work tomorrow to take it to a repair center and... debate this issue!
let's hope they honor this sony recall. Denis, Montreal.

GREAT INFORMATION. This is my second Sony 717 I had it to Best Buy in Jan. of this year and found out my Warranty from Best Buy had expired by three months and they told me it would cost about $500 to fix. Decided not to. I then did a check on the www for problems with the 717 and found this site full of information and people with my same problem. Thank you for the postings.

Thanks to this site and the link provided above, I started the return process on April 30th, 2007. Today is May 14th, 2007 and I am currently holding in my hands the very DSC-F717 I sent out to Sony just 15 days ago, only this time IN WORKING ORDER! Not only was the turn-around time fast, but they were rather diligent in sending me updates via email. The whole thing was very professional, and pain free. which is quite unusual when dealing with a major corporation like Sony. Hopefully this problem has been PERMANENTLY rectified, and will not recur in a few more years!

I hope this isn’t just a temporary ‘make do’ repair!

I actually rang Sony about 2-3months ago and the operator I spoke to said sorry there was nothing they could do because I was out of my warrenty so I just left it at that but then decided to do some googling and came across this post!

I started having the same problem with my DCS F717. Sometimes the picture would come out faded white. I reset the camera and it started working normal and then it started again. I also noticed when I take a picture it is not displayed immedialately. The mode dail also takes a while to switch from mode to mode. Any recommendations?

After my camera exhibited the same symptoms over this past weekend I serched for any sort of answer.....finding this forum. Thanks to those who started this page. Thak you for your assistance.

Fikso,
I took some pics and a film before sending it off to them so that they could see first hand what I was seeing. Obviously left the stick and battery in there when I sent it. Anyway, I got the camera back in perfect working order in only about 15 days from the point at which I mailed it out using their UPS label. Let's just hope this is now a PERMANENT fix! ;)

Mine had the pink distorted picture as in example A on the Sony site.
It seems that Sony does have the info regarding the free repair on their website but you have to look for it as they are not exactly advertising this service.
Thanks to Frank for providing the link....good eye.
I sent my camera to Laredo, Tx. on 6/4/2007 and got it back in working order on 6/11/2007.
I called once to check up on the repair and got some guy who said it was repaired and on the way back.
He didn't even call me Sahib!
Damn good service....I'm happy.

Wow, glad I found this site, thank you! Turned on my 717 today and encountered the black screen of DEATH. My 717 had all the systoms as described on Sony's web site. I was kind of bummed because I knew this wasn't going to be a cheap fix. So on a hunch I did a search on the web and found this site. I filled out the form and I will wait for the shipping label. It looks like Sony is going to take care of the problem after reading all the above posts. We shall see.

Hey, guys, just wanted everyone to know...I sent my camera off after I discovered the ccd problem and contacted sony. I got it back yesterday in perfect shape and *working*. Yay! I had the camera since 2003,no problems, very nice pictures etc., I went on vacation 6/07, camera screen would not focus and was blurry, everything else was o.k. , I could view menu settings and pictures, when I got home I went online to find a repair place and found sony repair link with info on the bad CCD sensors. So I got all the info and free mailing label sent it to Laredo,Tx. for the sensor repair only to be told by SONY that my camera was damaged in shipping by UPS!, so now I'm waitng for a UPS claims process, and nobody knows anything...! I bought the camera at market entry price back then and bought alot of accessories also. So now I don't know the camera's value today (discontinued Model),but I kept it in a hard case at all times and was in mint condition. I'm hoping that the camera can be repaired to full working order, but who knows....

Before using raw force and inappropriate tools to 'open up' my 717, just to satisfy my curiosity and see how does a (dead) digital camera looks from inside ;-( I had a short search for any available assembly sketches on the web.....and stumbled on this thread - MY LUCK !!! In short the story went as follows...and with the obvious happy end :-)))
1. I checked the symptoms described on a link somebody provided and they were 100% identical to what should have been a malfunctioning CCD
2. After contacting the national Sony representative through their official on line form I got a reply suggesting me to take the camera to the nearest authorized service, which, in my case was 20 minute drive from home, and if it turned really to be the CCD they would replace the chip on the expense of the Sony - WOW, that sounded promising !!!
3. The guys at the service took the camera (obviously not surprised by the described symptoms) and announced I will be contacted in about a week time !!!???
4. FIVE days later they phoned me and said they were in the middle of the process, confirming that it WAS the malfunctioning CCD as I hoped for (replacement material and work at no charge) but they asked if they could do some 'additional rectifications' (like retina adjustment and some other jumbomumbo) since they had the camera 'gut opened' and on the table. I agreed (who wouldn't) and picked up the camera next day (LESS THAN A WEEK) paying those extra 'rectifying' work close to 55 euro ($76).
All in all, my congratulations to Sony ! My lovely 717 is taking (excellent) pictures again (still one of their best prosumer digital cameras for sure) and in spite of not being 100% sure whether I paid 'little extra' for nothing or for real 'something' I am certain I got back my dearest camera in 100% working condition again (CCD chip replacement would have cost MUCH more for sure).
And a final line: all this happened in a small (but beautiful) country :-)))
Boris from Zagreb, Croatia.

My camera Sony DSC-F717 shows a black screen on the LCD and same thing on the finder. I can see old picutres so its not the screen itself, But when i try to take a picture nothing shows up. Do you know what could be causing this.Eddie
Tue, 16 May 2006 23:30:36 -0700Your camera is dead. The CCD image chip is no longer working. Known issue with this model and Sony should repair for free. Here is a link:
NOT EXACTLY. Not only CCD causes the problem.
On ebay I found a manual that helped me to repair the camera. My total cost was $15 !!

Heck I kept checking the work order status on mine after I sent it in.
One day the page said I had to call the service center.
I though, here we go, their gonna tell me mines not covered or something, but instead they wanted some details and it seemed like they wanted me to admit I knew there was a recall. Which seemed silly since I printed my shipping label from the recall page.
Anyway I just checked the status today and it says. "The Sony product that you have inquired about has been repaired and will be shipped back to you within one business day."
Heck if it gets here by Mid week that makes the whole process a week turn around.
My guess is that they just hand out refurbs. Can anyone varify that?

Just got mine back today from Sony Repair Facility.
Looks like they just fixed mine and all seems well at this point.
The camera was reset, so i had to reprogram my settings which may mean they replaced a major component. The packaging was very good. I may be imagining things but the shutter speed seems to snap faster then before. Maybe a faster ccd processor chip? Or the camera is having less trouble focusing. Can anyone else verify that their camera seems faster after the repair?

I sent my DSC-F717 in a year ago to the Sony Laredo Repair Facility on this CCD repair. Got it back....nothing had been done. Sent it again and it worked fine when received back. Now it's crapped out again (Sep 2007). Called Sony and am sending it in again. This camera is "pampered" and has only been used a couple of times since the year ago repair. I live in a semi-desert region so the mosture Sony blames as the major cause of this is not a factor. I'm wondering if the "replaced" component was really a redesign or just more junk.
Anyone else have a similar experience of getting it repaired and then it breaks again??

I got my camera back today from Laredo center, TX and it seems that the CCD was replaced.
Pictures are coming out fine now, BUT there is NO picture in the viewfinder! When I look through the ViewFinder, there is nothing. (Yes, the lens cap is OFF.) LCD working fine.
Will call them again tomorrow and see what they want me to do next.

I believe there was a class action suit for this problem and if you contact Sony and get the address, they will repair it free! Both my sister and I had the same problem with the same model.
Sony was very prompt about fixing it and I had mine back within 10 days!

Glad I found this site. Was thinking we would have to buy a new camera for christmas, didn't want to as we love our camera but didn't see much other choice. Ours showed pink images for a long time and then finally the black screen occured on Sat the 27th Oct. Took it into the dealer and they said Sony said it would cost $130 just to look at it! Nothing was said by Sony about a recall. Funny that the dealer had no idea of the recall either. We registered our camera with Sony too, so I am a bit annoyed that they didn't send out anything also. I am in Australia and on its site it said nothing about a cut off date for repairs so I'm hoping it's free still! Thanks again. You have made me a very happy chappy!

ok just came across this site .. my camera is doing the same thing. I called Sony and they told me that I can send it in .. if its the CCD chip they will fix it for free. . but if its not they will send me a bill. Now.. I am leery wondering if they will say it wasnt the CCD image chip so that they dont have to fix all these cameras for free. What do you all think?

Hi, i'm from Portugal, i used to have a Sony 717 (great camera), till last Setember 2007, symptoms from a ccd problem,
take fotos but always black, all the other functions working great, you can ear the zoom working, and the click when you take the photo, but always save it black.
Ive take it to a sony repair shop, where they diagnose the following problem : "Iris get stucked inside the lens"
Is this possible? Are they just trying escape from the free repair?
Tks

Hello, I too have a SONY F-717 and live in Holland.
Does anyone know if there is a different recall number that is valid for Holland?
I mentioned the SONY recall and was told it is only for the United States.
Thank you in advance if someone knows how I can convince SONY to assist me here in The Netherlands.

Regarding my last post. We had the camera sent away to an authorised repairer through the store that we bought it from. They charged us $132 upfront to cover their cost and if it was the ccd chip then they would refund us the money and get their money to repair it from Sony. It did end being the chip (which of course it was!) so we are expecting a cheque in the mail of $132. I am in Australia and managed to get it for free, so this business of it only being valid for the USA is a load of bull. Print out all of this for them. It might change their mind! Thats what we did!

I to have the same issue on my DSC-F717. Worked fine then one day all images through viewfinder or via LCD all distorted with orange, purple and now black at the sides.
a) Does this sound like the CCD issue I have been reading so much about?
b) Can anybody tell me the best route to get this repaired in the UK?
c) Can I still get it repaired for free by Sony at this late date?
Any feedback would be great since I have enjoyed the camera and would like to get it fully operational again.

Hello all,
Thanks to all of you for posting this important information.
Oh my, isn't the 'net a great thing?
My only regret is that I did not see this info earlier. I just gave Besy Buy $80 to extend my warranty when I discovered this issue, as the exrended warranty I purchased at the pont of sale, was about to expire.
My F717 has been doing the same thing. Oddly, the problem seems to *Come & Go*.
Sometimes it works fine. I just sent in the online repair request form, taken from the site linked here.
I will post back, and let you know how my repair experience went with Sony. Luckily, I have a back-up camera, but I have always loved my F717. I own many Sony products, as I have always had good experiences with them. Never had a problem with any of their other products. Camcorder, 2 TV's including a high-end HDTV... all perform perfectly. I can only hope Sony will stand behind my Camera.
I have attached one of the photos taken when this issue was present. Let me know if any of you other owners had a similar image.
Regards,
Dan

Same problem. Thank you for this side. A couple of months ogo I contacted sony (Germany) because of stripes on the screen, but they didn't tell my thats a general problem. So I thought the repair will be very expensive - and I did nothing.
Now I will send it back including the information I found here.
Thanks,

I bought my DSC F717 in 2003, and now it doesn't work at all. the problem is the same as you said here. It's CCD. This website is really helpful, otherwise I don't know what happened to my camera. This morning I sent the camera to SONY store with the important notice downloaded from their website. They just asked me to fill out a form without saying anything. So I am waiting for their result and I hope it's free.
Thank all of you.

Sony will fix the CCD problem till September 30, 2008 for free of charge. Please look at the Notice posted in Support News & Alerts section of Sony Website
"It has come to our attention that a limited number of products, manufactured before March 2004, and incorporating a certain type of image sensor device (CCD), may exhibit the following:
When the product is used in camera mode, the LCD panel and/or electronic viewfinder exhibits
either a distorted image or no image at all.
We have determined that this only occurs in a limited number of devices, but may be accelerated if they are exposed to hot and humid environments.
Until September 30, 2008, Sony will repair, free of charge, affected products exhibiting the above-mentioned symptom where it is caused by the image sensor device. Sony will also cover the cost of shipping and handling from and to addresses within the United States and US Territories for service to correct this issue."

Based on the postings above, I called Sony at the above number and after a short test on the camera, they said to send it in for repair at their cost. They said it sounded like the CCD chip. The symptom was just one day my screen and viewfinder displayed a reddish tone all over, with fringes of blue and fuzzy focus, like I had vasaline on the lens.
They said it would be repaired free, so let's see. Thanks for all the postings. Bruce 12/13/07

this is my second f717 that I am sending back. my original camera had this problem in 2006, took them a whooping 3 months (way to go Sony!) to send me back a working camera, and now here we go again. And I had a really bad experience with their customer service. Sigh. I will just avoid Sony from now on, they are not the only one with good products.

Regarding the bad CCD image chip So what happens now that its passed the legal action deadline (I think claims had to be submitted by Oct 2007-ish)? I purchased this in May of 2003, registered it, but NEVER received any notice of any problems/repair opportunities or legal action.
Will Sony still cover the shipping and repair costs?
Can you offer suggestions on what direction I should take and what Sony is or is not obgligated to cover?
THanks, Suzanne.

HEY THERE!
my camera (which WAS totally awesome as you know) was experiencing this, with the screen having a significant yellow tint. I took it to my brothers to record the christmas moments but at the vital moment the screen wouldnt show, so i turned it off turned it on and it wouldnt even display the on/off light.
Now it doesnt acknowledge being charged or anything, it's like its a really expensive ornament.
I'm fairly sure this is more than a CCD but if it started with a CCD problem perhaps this might help the financial repairs. My local Jessops (cam. store) said "All Sony's are 175 to repair".
On top of this I bought it on ebay so I have no receipt, no warranty and little paperwork, although I do have the box.
Anyone have similar problems. Might try poking Sony about the problem before I splash out 400 for a replacement.
cheers

I have the Sony DSC-F717 and am experiencing a problem that I can view pictures I have already taken but when I want to take a picture, I get a black screen with a red line across the top.
Apparently, this is a problem with the image sensor device. Per the Sony web site:
It has come to our attention that a limited number of products, manufactured before March 2004, and incorporating a certain type of image sensor device (CCD), may exhibit the following:
We have determined that this only occurs in a limited number of devices, but may be accelerated if they are exposed to hot and humid environments.

The GREAT NEWS is that Sony will fix this for FREE! Go to the link below, trouble shoot the camera. If it still experiences the problem, follow the instructions and Sony will generate a repair order and email/snail mail you a repair order with a free shipping ticket!

Thank you all (from Ireland) for this thread. My F717 developed the "smeared colour" problem (exactly as shown on Sony's Website) at a family wedding about two months ago. Immediately on return, I found this site, and the long thread about the problem. Brought my camera to a local Sony Centre (a retail outlet), showed them the download from your site (and from Sony's site), they took the camera in and sent it to the Irish service HQ. Hey presto, got the camera back today (5 weeks later) with CCD replaced. Replacement was free of charge, they didn't charge for shipping & postage, and they even carried out an overall functional free check on the whole camera. So am I impressed ? Yes, with Sony's receptive attitude, and yes by the contribution of this site to consumer welfare. Camerahacker.com rocks. Declan 4 March 2008

I have the same problem, and just chat on line with their tech support. Please go to:
Sony eSupport - Contact Technical Support
choose the camera support. You can either call or chat with them. After they decided it's really the CCD problem on line, they'll send you a link to report and get a case #, so you can send in and fix for free till Sept, 2008.
I was pretty happy to find out that, instead of believing some site said it ended in 2007...
So give it a try, they are pretty good.

Frank, once again thank you for this perfect link!
Since yesterday my DSC F-717 - bought in 2003 in Germany - suddenly has the dark screen and I find your link today.
Unfortunately in the SONY German homepage this issue is not listed: I can't connect the USA support because my German home has no ZIP-Code which is requested. Surely I will find a way. If so, I will put this information here to help the other german 717-Fans.

I am so happy I read this forum before putting my camera in the bin! It broke last year after having given me 2 years worth of brilliant photographs. All of a sudden all my pictures started to come out pink (as enclosed) but the LCD and Viewfinder still worked so I did not think it had anything to do with the CCD at that time. Yesterday though recharged the battery and the LCD and viewfinder did not work. Phoned Sony who told me it was a problem with the CCD; so now hopefully I will soon have my camera back and fully working again and repairs for Free too (although have since bought a new digital camera but it no way compares to my sony.

Thanks to everyone who posted, you inspired me to not take any crap from Sony regarding the CCD issue. I reported to them about a year ago that I was experiencing problems with the CCD. The CSR gave me an online questionaire about the symptoms and concluded that my camera was not exhibiting the problem! Livid I ended the call and put the camera storage.
I spoke to them again this afternoon and after I sychronized my language with his, I was able to get a RMA work order for my F717!

I sent my f717 back to sony for the CCD recall only to get an estimate for $211+. It seems that since the battery door is loose and the on/off sticks sometimes, they will not fix the faulty CCD unless I pay them to do the other repairs. Even with the other issues,
the camera worked fine until the CCD failed, but some office worker who has never seen my camera or knows anything about the workings of cameras insists that the CCD is not the problem with my camera. I have never had such rude and uncompromising relations with any other company before. And to think I have 2 sony tv's, a sony vcr, 2 other sony cameras, not to mention other sony products I have had over the years....not good customer relations either.

Hi, my DSC F717 has had the same problem since last year but I never bothered to look for it on the internet assuming that it must be something that does not normally happen and therefore must be just my camera. Just writing to find out if they are still doing it. The problem seems to be like the ones in this thread where I can see the old pictures but the screen just shows multicoloured lines when I try and take a new picture.

HEADS UP! Just sent my F717 back to Sony for the recall on Sep. 6, 2008. My CCD chip must be bad too because in movie mode, as the Sony web site says, it will only record sound but no picture. The web site also said that the RECALL PERIOD EXPIRES ON SEP. 30, 2008. Got lucky because extended warranty ran out April 2008. If you know anybody that has this model, get them the recall info immediately. Here's a web link for the info http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/news-item.pl?mdl=DSCF717&ne . . .

Me again. Even if the recall expires, you might still be able to get Sony to pay for the repairs. My camera was registered with them & I didn't receive any info from them about this recall. If you live in the US, you might be able to file a complaint with your states Bureau Of Consumer Protection (Pa.) or Division Of Consumer Affairs (Fl.) & get the free repair. For those of you in other states, these type of offices usually are under your states Attorney General Office. Go to your states web site & do a search. Good Luck. Hope this will help the people who missed the recall.

I just found out about this F.O.C repair from Sony. I filled out the required info. It's been three days and still no email of any UPS label. Did I do something wrong? Will I still be able to get this repair done free since I contaced Sony prior to Sept. 30th? Or am I SOL? Any info would be appreciated.

I discovered this thread today after being quoted 200 for a repair on my F717! I phoned (UK) and was advised the same information and told that if it is CCD I will get a free repair. However, the packing slip shows a charge of 114 and I'm reluctant to send my precious (though broken) camera off to them if they hold me on a charge as I don't think it's worth it. Anyone else get this when they registered the repair? Also, I only threw out my receipt very recently as I purchased in 2003 so I have no proof of purchase!

my 2nd of 3 Sony 717 cameras went Black screen today. Used only 20 shots when it went(total) Called Sony repair and after telling them this is my second one they said UPS call tag is on the way!! So they are repairing them past the September 30, 2008 cut off date. Said $15 charge for ship would have to be charged even though my ship was paid both ways on the first time. Maybe because it was the past the final date?? Todays date 10/2/08.

When you click on the link above, it does indeed state that they are extending the warranty time until the end of March next year, but it also says that they are now requiring a credit card for the $15 shipping charge. That is something they didn't require before!

Just called Sony and they are repairing mine FOC other than the 20.00 S&H fee. This is the second one that I've had to have repaired. Other one was repaired a couple years back. Can't fault them for service and repair. If you look on the Sony site says it is out of warranty, but a phone call soon shows that they'll make good on the product.

Like many others on this site, I had given up on my old camera until I recently dug it out of my closet to try again. I found this site and called sony today at 239-768-7547. I explained the problem and they were quick to help me. I had to pay $20.00 for a "special label" which sort of irritated me. I put up a pretty big fuss, but in the end I gave in. My labels are on the way and I was told that if it is the CCD the camera will be fixed at no cost to me. If the techs dianose that it is another issue, they will call me and quote a repair cost. I bought mine in 2004ish and don't have original packaging or a receipt. I guess none of that matters as long as you can provide a serial number from the sticker on the bottom of the camera!
Everyone cross your fingers and hope they determine that it is a bad CCD!!!

When I got a small point-and-shoot, I put away my F717 and forgot about it until recently. I kept trying everything to get the screen to come out of black mode. Then I decided to google, and found this place. THANK YOU SO MUCH. I have submitted my request for a label, and can't wait to send my camera to get fixed so I can use it again.

I got my one in 2003 and used it for a couple of years. Then it was put away in my closet until I dig it out yesterday. Lucky me, I got the exact same problem as everyone described here. Thanks for the infomation. My camera gets saved.

Wow!! I first noticed this problem a couple of years ago with my f717 but didn't bother looking into fixing it. I just went a bought me another camera I had been eyeing for a while (Canon G7). However, today I was browsing through all my old pictures (those taken with the DSC F717) and I must say that the quality difference is astonishing. The photos taken with the 717 are some of my best pictures. Thanks for the info; I will probably have to pay for the repairs out of pocket, but the benefits of having the camera working again are worth the expense.

These cases are called PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE. Consumers should fight this crime fiercely.

Title: Sony DSC-F717 underexposes
Weblog: Camera Hacker
Excerpt: Have a Sony DCS F717 that one day just began to only record very underexposed shots...almost completely white. Tried swapping sticks, no difference. Can I change the internal parts? I see many available on line. I mean so what if I break it, it is broken now. Disappointing, and Sony IS to b . . .
