Sony DSC-H1 RAW mode hack?

Hello,

I'm about to go ahead and pick up a Sony DSC-H1, it looks like just the perfect camera for me. The only thing it lacks is support for RAW mode, only JPG and TIFF. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck hacking this or any other Sony camera's firmware to enable RAW mode. I mean, the camera obviously has the data available to it as the jpgs are generated from the RAW data in the first place, sony just didnt provide a way to get that data out of the camera.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Nathan

what possible benefit does 'raw' mode have over tiff? are you hoping for more than 8 bits per channel, or what..?

Benefit #1:
~~~~~~~~~~~
RAW modes are usually 12 or more bits per channel (and normally two green channels). This gives 2^(12-8)=16 times the precision of 8 bits. To some extend, I think this can be compared to 4 stops. However, the last 4 bits are probably pretty noisy.
Benefit #2:
~~~~~~~~~~~

I believe that TIFF is normally generated from processed data, exactly like JPEG without the lossy compression. This means that in-camera algorithms for blurring, sharpening, white-balance and friends. All these algorithms are lossy, in the sense that you loose information. The RAW image is simply the data which was read from the sensor. The above algorithms could just as well be performed on a workstation in post-processing. But the result of doing so requires a quality 'raw' material.

It requires more time to work on raw data. Firstly, there is more of it. Secondly, one needs to do more to it; for instance white balance. Much of this , however, can probably be aided by scripts.

I have a DSC H1. It may not have RAW, but it takes a very good picture.

Yeah, sure... Maybe in full sun, but when there is not enough light the JPEG compression sucks...

Another "profesional" photographer... Sure I am using manual features... Why would I look for a hack if I wouldn't have basic knowledge about the camera???
