Sony DSC-P92 with stuck lens

Hi.
I was given a Sony 5.0 P92 camera as it was not working.
When i press on the Power. It comes on with a green light and then goes off. The zoom seems to be stuck. LCD will not come on.
Is this camera no good or can Sony fix this. Will it be worth to fix the camera or to buy one. Live in Canada.
Thanks

Others have reported that it would cost anywhere between $130 to $200 to fix. Some have been able to realign the lens themsevles. See the "dsc-w50 acess/turn off on again" and the "Sony DSC W70 with stuck lens" TrackBacks below.

I have a DSC-P92 for over 3 years. However, recently I found that when I turned it on I wouldn't get any image in the view finder and the lens would not open fully. The lens now wont open or close. Any one have a similar problem or know how to fix it?

Cheers

The problem is with two gears inside the camera. One small plastic gear has to turn and while involved with a bigger gear (5 to one ratio) it pushes the lens out.

The main problem is that the gears get stuck and the smaller one can not turn the bigger one since gears on teeth to teeth.

This is the reason why so many people, including myself, have been able to resolve the issue temporarily, by tapping on it.

This is a design flaw and the unit has to be recalled, but SONY (As mush as I love their products) are being stubborn. They know they will lose money if they were to pay back people in retail price.

I will stay away from SONY digital cameras at all costs.....try other brands like Cannon and Nikon.

Sony digital cameras are not what SONY is good at.... and I think many people are learning that the hard way.

Weblog: Camera Hacker
Excerpt: i think the reason it would not turn on was becuase the lense was slightly off from the first drop. my only conclusion as to why it turned back on is that we must have set the lense back in alignment when we tapped it. weird. we didnt think it was going to work!!! way too funny!!! and to think i was . . .

Title: Sony DSC W70 with stuck lens

Excerpt: Have stripped my camera down this morning and removed memory stick. Half way through checking I replaced the batteries and turned the camera on and now functions perfectly. I have replaced the memory stick and all is well. Maybe an error code had been generated in conjunction with the memory stick. . . .
