Sony DSC-W180 and the USB

I bought this camera but my machine (XP Pro/SP3) does not recognize it when I connect it to the USB 2.0 port. I have tried the software supplied by Sony (PMB) as well as installed Sony's USBDRVEN.EXE and no luck.

Can somebody help me?

I believe USBDRVEN.EXE is only for Sony camcorders and it will not work for Sony digital cameras. Have you tried changing "USB" settings in the camera's set-up menu?

After that the next thing to try it to load up "Device Manager" in Windows XP. After running "Device Manager" plug in the digital camera to see what it shows up as. You may have to plug it in and unplug it several times to see which device driver changed on that list.

I found the problem. The USB ports were at the back in this old tower (no front panel) and I had used an extension cable to bring the port to the front for convenience. With this extension cable (1 mtr long) and the camera's USB cable it was perhaps too long. Once I connected directly with only the camera's supplied cable the camera was recognized.

Thanks for updating us on the solution. We'll all have to keep maximum USB cable length in mind.

From the USB Info: Frequently Asked Questions:

Q1: How long of a cable can I use to connect my device?
A1: In practice, the USB specification limits the length of a cable between full speed devices to 5 meters (a little under 16 feet 5 inches). For a low speed device the limit is 3 meters (9 feet 10 inches).
