Sony DSC W70 with stuck lens

My "just out of warranty" Sony DSC W70 camera ran out of power with the lens in the half-extended position. When I reinsert the recharged bttery, the LCD display tells me to power off and on again, and the camera beeps. I can't get it out of this cycle. When I push the "playback" button, the LCD menu comes on and stays on, but I can't get the lens to retract or the camera to otherwise operate.

Any ideas?

Have stripped my camera down this morning and removed memory stick. Half way through checking I replaced the batteries and turned the camera on and now functions perfectly. I have replaced the memory stick and all is well. Maybe an error code had been generated in conjunction with the memory stick. The only other factor could have been a loose plug with in the camera itself.

It seems that the new sony cybershot range has a lot of problems -_-"
my DSC-W50 had the same problem. luckily it was in warranty and i returned it. Sony had to replace the whole lens (which costs $150-200). I got the camera back and now, two months later, it got stuck again.

I think i'm just going to return it AGAIN. I hope the replacements will cost them a lot so they learn to make better quality products. Some companies with big names (mainly from advertisement) produce low quality products with consumers assuming them to be good.

only suggestion is to return it to the place you bought it from. OR (from another forum) i read that some people hit the camera around the lends area and the gear fell back into place and it works again.

I have a DSC-W12 with the lens stuck out. Took it to the sony shop and they quoted something like 120 pounds flat rate to look at it but no garuntee they could repair. So ive bought a new one, and was going to sell W12 on ebay as spares or repair, however ive just seen the exact same working model for 50 odd pounds! How much does anybody think its worth as spares or repair?

I had the exact same problem with sony dsc w70. I searched google for the issue and found some suggestions here. I have tried hitting the camera around the lens area as suggested by nick and the camera works now. No idea how long this will work. :(
I have always been proud of my sony. I am begenning to feel bad.

I'm also having trouble with my new dsc-w50 after using the charger overseas to charge the battery. Now pressing the power
button does not always work. I have a bad feeling that this product is not very robust.

I have an old Sony Cybershot dsc-w7 and the lens stucked on me too. Unlucky, the warranty was over, because I have it for about 2 years now. The lense never retrack and the message said, turn off and on again, but that didn't do any good. I called sony and they told me that $150.00 just to look at it and if there is any repair I would be looking at around $100.00 to $200.00 for parts and labor. As I've read to all these problem with the dsc model, I've come to a conclusion that Sony just the big name and their products start to lost quality over time. As a comsumer, we all should stay away from Sony products.

I have tried all the above help guide some work but just for a day or two and some don't even work. I'm about to take this baby apart and look at sony's technology. Any help would be appreciated.

I am also facing same problem with my W70. The problem is coming because of some fault in gears of lense, which are not able to move properly. For my camera, it fell down in beach and some small sand particles may be damaged that gear box. I tried pushing the lense gently while shitch off as suggested above and its now working, as am able to switch on the camera as well as take the photos.... BUT STILL I AM NOT ABLE TO USE ZOOM FACILITY. IF i am trying to zoom in or zoom out, its same problem is showing 'turn the power off and on again'. can any body HELP me out what to do.

You guys offer all sorts of weird solution to the Sony range of cameras with problems.
Nobody....and I mean nobody...on this forum at least....have suggested to press RESET with the camera OFF, and then switch ON. Try that, it may make you day.

Eugene,
The W70 does not have a RESET button, or at least I haven't found one on the camera or in the literature. My problem is there is not action in the camera, full battery or otherwise. I removed the front, back, and side panels and noted that the flash and lens assemblies are lose in the camera body. I know I have dropped the camera at least once, but no broken parts fell out upon opening the camera, and no other visible issues. I re-loaded the battery and IT WORKS FINE! I fidgeted with the lens assembly with the power on and the camera dies, which indicates that there is some intermittent short or interlock that tells the camera to cut power. Not sure ow I'm going to fix this, but it will probably consist of some tape and glue as opposed to another $150 lens assembly.

I have the same issue with my DSC-P73. Even with fully recharged battery I couldn't turn it on to shoot. Well, it will turn on without problem if the program knob is set to SETTING MENU. It just turn on and off with the lens stuck out.

I found that the reset button is hidden and covered beside the camera usb/av/dc ports. You guys might wanna check that place out.

Same here. Camera was dropped and lens stuck open, kept getting message to turn off and on, beeping noise.....I read on another site what to do and it worked for me. As you turn the camera on, pull out on the lens to help it along, as you turn it off, push in on the lens to help it close. At one point when the camera was off, I pushed the lens in all the way, slowly but don't be afraid to push until it stays shut. Then as I turned it on I had to pull the lens out a little. It kept opening and closing continuously. Just keep pulling and also move the base of the lens until it is even all the way around. Push and pull while turning off and on. Don't be afraid to push and pull with your fingers, not a tool. It took me about 10-15 min. Make sure the lens is pulled out all the way. Sometimes it is just that last small amount that needs to be pushed or pulled.

Penny

I FORGOT ONE THING, turn the base lens also as if you are tightening it.

I fixed my stuck lens with the 91 error message.
Tried everything suggested on my w-50 and finally I used a screw driver with a "j" hook on it and gently pulled the lens out while turning the camera on and off.
I hooked the lens in the front opening and pulled, the lens came out more and more each time until it was fully extended. It made some funny noise but what it was doing was adjusting itself. Works just fine now, it flashes and the error msg is gone. Sony support was no help at all.
Good Luck.....Mike

Had the same problem with the lens sticking. I tried pulling on the lens everytime i turned the camera on. eventually the lens came out but i still got the "power off and on" error. So i tried gently twisting the lens when i cycled the power on. After that the camera was able to take pictures but had zooming problems. Again I tried twisting gently while trying to zoom all the way out. It does takes a patient touch but the camera is fully functional now. I hope this helps. Thanks penny and good luck to those with the same problem.

Hi,

I also had the lens stuck problem with my DSC-W7. Turning the camera on only resulted in the "turn the camera off and on again" -message. I tried pushing and pulling the zoom while turning off and on, nothing seemed to work. I even disassemled the camera as far as I felt it was the point of no return. In the end I assembled the camera again and in frustration I hit on the table a few times, and now it works!!?? WTF!!?? I can't recommed hitting your camera to the table but it worked for me.

i'm having the exact same problem -- lens retracting/extending and saying access...but not accessing. talked to "sony support" tonight and they recommend the $180 repair. that's almost as much asi paid for it to begin with! i love this camera, so its pretty frustrating. anybody got more ideas? my lens isn't stuck, but it was 2 months ago and i paid $60 in the philippines to get it fixed. now i'm worried to send it in and have sony realize someone else was working on it.

Fri, 04 Apr 2008 22:38:05 +0000

yeah i had a similar problem with sony dsc p73
i found the problem is linked up to the camera eating batteries voraciously, the camera finishes a new battery after a few minutes then closes down with the lens stuck out,
i managed to get the priapic lens back in (without violence) by switching the camera on in 'view' mode and then power off

(doesnt fix the greediness issue with the batteries tho, i will know better than to buy a sony camera next time)

Sony is GARBAGE!! Three years ago I purchased a sony cybershot to take to an Iraq deployment...long story short the camera had multiple issues and eventually was replaced by Staples extended warranty. Now I own a DSC-W70 and surprise surprise im having the same "stuck lens/turn on off...". I have sent the camera to the Sony repair center in Laredo TX TWICE, they replaced the lens both times and sent it back, both times it worked for about ten minutes and crapped itself. I hate sony products, they have caused more stress than memories (pictures). They have terrible customer service and just a big name to ride on for a garbage product. I have assured Sony that I will NEVER purchase their cameras again and will inform all my friends, family and Soldiers to rethink purchasing sony products if they want quality, or at least purchase an extended warranty from the seller, YOU WILL NEED IT. I just mailed off a letter to the sony executive committee, and ill post again when i receive word back from them. I know im wasting my time but they have pissed me off so this is my only way to vent.

My prob : lens moved in and out after switch on & asked to switch off.
When camera told me to switch off I popped the battery out, re-inserted it then switched the camera back on. Problem solved as when next switched on system re-calibrated lens position. It did re-occur when I zoomed in & I did the same. I have now tested to death with zoom & various shot modes & everythin OK. Sony reset instructions didn't work. Software reset didn't work either.
Hope this helps.

My DSC W70 started to go in and out once the power was on.
AFter reading through the comments, I decided to try my own thing.
When the lens was in the "out" position and before it retracted, I pulled and twisted it a bit and it clicked and stayed open.
I tested the zoom and the wide.
It then got stuck in the out position powered off or on.
I managed to get it open again and freely moving.
Right this second, the lens is opening well with a little click at the problem spot.

I do wonder if it is not due to my daughter putting the camera down (more than once) on the lens, as well as opening it with the lens into the palm. Now that her lifeline has been damaged, I think she knows the importance of proper camera care.

I want to say thanks for the great posts. I have a cybershot w-55, and one random day it started the "Access" bulls@$t! I tried the tapping with a pencil on the front lense and it started working again. of course, i had to do for the first couple times i turned it back on because it was the resolution wasn't working well in zoom, but after a couple of times of turning the camera on and off and taping, it works great. Well i just purchased a new zoom on ebay for my camera for $21 and it fixed my camera's problem and now the zoom is working 100%. I hated to spend $20 more but its a cheap way to get my camera back working without buying a whole new camera that will have the same issues probably as most of them do.

I got the REAL SOLUTION. Just rotate the lens with your finger to the same direction when you adjust the distance with zoom in/out button. In other words, "You help your motor moving the lenses to the same direction". Zoom in, rotate to the right, zoom out rotate to the left. Do it several times until your motor can move to all zoom position by itself.

I also had the "Turn off and on power again" message. A while back I lent my DSC-W70 to my brother when he was going to take some pictures at the beach. He said he had it in a water proof case like thing, Now I don't know if I truly believe him. The reason for that is after I did the hit technique many times, I switched my camera to ISO mode and hit it in the corner and I was so ultra surprised when it fully turned on and I saw small sand particles on the lens probably meaning that those were the reason the lens was stuck. So fully thank you to the person/people who found this strategy. Now I don't have to pay $111 to get my four year old camera working. Yay!

I have a Sony DSC W80, and had the turn off and on message as well. Unfortunately, the camera is outside the warranty and would cost around $100 to fix. Thu, 22 Jan 2009 23:42:20 +0000

My problem started when the cover of the lenses got stuck, and wouldn't close when I shut off the camera. That was no big deal. Then a couple of times I had the switch off and back on, and it worked -- until it didn't, and I kept getting the message, with the lenses going all the way out and back in. I read in another board that one solution was to use compressed air and blow it all over the lenses. After a few minutes doing that, it worked again, I even took a picture. Then I tried to clean the lenses, and they got stuck all the way out. I tried pushing it in, as somebody mentioned, and now it's stuck all the way in, and won't open. The little lens cover is now shut again, though...

I had a similar problem with DSCW55. The lens would go out the camera would try to start up and then the lens would go back in. As suggested some slight percussive maintenance (i whacked it lightly around the lens area with my fingers) cleared up the issue. I'm glad someone suggested this as I just thought the camera was just plain broken.

My ancient DSC-W1 got stuck out as well - almost gave up on it. It was doing the same thing with the shutter half out and telling me to turn it back off and back on (had to take out the batteries each time I did). I tried pushing and pulling on it as I turned it on a ton of times, but it didn't work until I TWISTED the middle section of the lens. I had to use more force then I was comfortable with, but once I did it got right back to normal. Maybe this time around I won't abuse it quite as much.

Thanks to everyone for their ideas in this forum - you just saved me a couple hundred bucks as I was about to go out and buy a new camera.

I am on my 2nd sony cybershot. The first one had the lens replaced twice under warranty. I thought I would give sony another shot because I like the way the camera works compared to other pocket cameras.

Almost immediately my lense started having problems.

I hope some sony reps read google because the internet is so full of people having the same lense problems with cybershot.

class action law suit anyone?

My wife had the same problem and when I looked at the extend lens the top was not "square" to the middle piece or the camera. It wiggled like it wanted to focus when I powered it up. So, I just gently grabbed the crooked piece (it was slightly off center) and wiggled it and it snapped shut. Problem solved.

My sister has a DSC-W50 but I was using it. It worked perfectly fine when I was using it and I turned it off for a couple of minutes. I had no idea what happen to it or if I dropped it on accident but the camera kept on saying to turn off and on over and over. So I was reading these comments about dropping it and the lens going back into place. What I did was I turned it off and dropped it face down about 4 inches from the table. It worked!

I have a W120 where when turned on the lens would open/retract 4 times and then say turn the power off and on. When turned off I tried smacking ends, then around the lens- nothing worked. Finally I smacked the lens itself with my hand. That worked- it's fixed and taking pictures.

Thanks to all of the people who gave advice to keep tapping/banging in the lens area. My 2-year-old niece played with and dropped my Sony Cyber-Shot last night. After trying to tenderly fix it myself, I thought my camera was a lost cause and just tried your suggestions as a last resort - AND IT WORKED!!! I tapped it (medium-hard) around the lens area with a screw driver flat edge. The lens finally retracted, but would not open until I slapped the lens area (with the cover closed) a few times with my hand. My camera now works perfectly - like new, again...except now with some scratches. I don't care about that. Just wanted to save having to send & pay for repairs or buy a new camera. I have been pleased with the photos and performance, other than this problem, which had a relatively easy fix, afterall! Aloha & Mahalo, mona

I fixed my Sony cyber shot!! The lens got stuck open after I set it up for a timed photo and it tipped over. *I will neve do that again. How did I fix it?! I tried everything on this site. But what worked was lightly tapping it with a rubber hammer. I was shocked how lightly I had to hit it. Good luck! You can do it too!

Thanks to those who said 'tap the lens'. I did this while the lens was closed, just tapped with my finger all around a few times. Then when I put the camera on I could see to take a picture but it wasn't clear. So, I did what Eugene said, went to menu, found reset. Camera works fine now. BUT don't buy a Sony!!

i had this problem with my DSC-W220.
i dropped it this morning(on carpet.)
i had to help push the lens back in,
then i turned it on and the 'turn off and then turn back on' screen showed up,
and my lens just went back and forth. it looked perfectly fine. it wasnt crooked or anything..
but i tried tapping it, twisting the lens, and helping it go in and out.

but then i got frustrated and tapped it a few times on my desk, and now it works perfect.
--hope this helped. and good luck to everyone else!

So I have a DSC-W170 and I dropped it on its lens the other day. Now the lens is fully retracted and is very hard to pull out. I've tried tapping the lens, rotating it, and just plain beating it up. The problem is that the lens can't pop out on its own. I don't know what to do...

You guys are geniuses. I tried what you said and hitting it on my leg twice worked!!! I had tried the pulling of the lens many times to no avail. And, read how someone in frustration had hit it on the table. Well, I was frustrated and hit it on my leg twice and just like that it works again!!!! Thanks, you saved my Disney trip!!!!

Just saved myself a ton of money!
My problem was a little bit different from what most of you are talking about.

The lens was dirty and I couldn't get the lens cover to function normally. It would get stuck in a half-open or closed position and the lens barrel would move out and retract a few times. After the third of fourth time I got the "turn camera off then on again" display.
All i did to unstick the lens cover was to blow on it with a hair dryer (using the no heat option.)
the lens cover doesn't close now, but the camera works!

My lens was going in and out.........spoke with Sony, reset camera, etc, etc. Found this discussion, hit my camera around the lens and now it works fine.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Hello all,
I have a Sony DSC-W290. My friend was drunk, and turned on the power of the camera while she had her fingers over the lens. Big mistake. This resulted in the situation where the lens extends and retracts three times and finishes with the "Turn Power On And Off" error message.

I came to this webpage and tried a few tricks. The trick that succeeded was tapping the lens, reasonably hard, with a pencil while it's trying to open. Now I have a working camera again!

These damn cameras are so delicate.

God is GOOD!!!!!
That sums it up.

I bought a Sony DSC W290 camera in November and today the camera slipped from my hand and dropped almost 5 ft to my tiled floor. There was a minor scratch, but no other evidence of damage - until I turned it off.
The lens retracted, but the shutter didn't close at all. I fiddled the shutter closed, but when I restarted the camera, the lens was almost completely stuck, the display was extremely blurred, and I got the dreaded error message/beep.
I was of course horrified and tried off-on a few times, then manipulate the lens w/ the flat edge of a screwdriver.
I even opened the camera - only to find that the front could not come off and I'd have to disassemble the entire camera just to get to the lens.
While sniffling and glassy-eyed, I went online for help and was shocked at the number of web pages dedicated to this topic.

I read the suggestions here, but tapping with a pencil, and manipulating the lens w/ a screwdriver didn't work, so I kept searching and found this blog page:

http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-o . . .

Then, I did step 4, and voila! the lens opened up, then closed with a slight hiccup, but has worked smoothly the 10 times I tried since!

Hope this helps the rest of you. :)

My Sony DSC W290 was working, but recently the lens was slow to retract when I turned I turned it off a few times. I was taking pictures this morning, when I got that message, turn aff and turn back on, and it wouldn't go away. On a suggestion in this post, I pushed the lens back in, while also pressing the power button. I have loved this camera for 9 months, it takes beautiful pictures, so I was apprehensive, but it worked. I can now take pictures again. For how long, I don't know.

DSC W170. Same problem. Lens would not come out. Without having fist read this blog, I gently pulled out the lens as it was trying to power out.
There are some gears in there, and they did not sound well. I motored the lens in and out a few times, and now the gears sound OK.
That camera has been very gently treated - I carry it in a waterproof, well padded case.
Never been dropped, or on a beach, or in the rain. I've carried it hundreds of miles in my hiking backpack.
As people have commented, I think they must just be fragile.
Any recommendations for a make that isn't ?

I have had a few personel Cyber Shot cameras in my life and quiet a few cyber shot work cameras as well. (About 10 all totalled up). I am an exploration geologist and use the cameras mainly for photographing rocks. All have died on me with a stuck lens. You think I would have learnt by now. I hung in there because I thought I could at least re-use the batteries, chargers, cables and memory sticks. I have sent some back that will still under warranty to be replaced, but the inevitable is only delayed. I really like Sony but have to admit the Cyber Shot is really a crappy product. I agree 100% with the guy who took his camera to Irag. I would guess only a very small percentage of folks actually report these problems, you are only seeing the tip of the iceberg here. The actual problem with these cameras is huge. Sony is getting away with murder here. The only solution is to try tapping the lens in an ever increasing spiral of violence until the camera is reduced to fragments.

Dropped camera with it closed up. 5 hours later I took about 10 pictures with no problems. On the 10 hour of 10-10-10 I tried to take some birthday pictures and the camera lens would only go in and out and give the turn the camera off message. I like my DSC-120. I had tapped and twisted on the lens today and it still did not work. As I went to the computer to look up info on the problem it suddenly it started working! This is one of this best websites I have seen for good practical information and will give me a good base of info for when it happens again.

I had the problem that the lens wouldn't come out properly on my DSC-W170.
I followed David Ngati's suggestion above and tried step 4 on http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-o . . . (ie powering up the camera with the shutter button also pressed). This solved the problem. Many thanks.

Sony Cybershot: Model W290 (though probably makes no difference).

Same issues, power on causes the lens to run in and out mutliple times before getting a "power down error" message. Reviewed some of the solutions here and finally resorted to banging the camera (bottom surface) on a hard cover book, figuring the book has a little cushion rather than on the desk. Repeated a couple of times increasing the force used and "voila" the camera now functions normally.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! My DSC-W70 has been stuck for over a year and I never got around to fixing it - tried through Sony and the esupport and a repair would have cost at least $111 plus. I kept getting the Access and Turn Power Off and On error message and the lens wouldn't open or shut, was just stuck. So I banged it against my knee, as someone suggested. I took the battery out. I found the tiny reset button and tried that. But what really worked was gently using my fingers to pull the lens all the way out. Now it works again!! I'm thrilled! A three second solution - and FREE!!! THANK YOU!!!

DSC W220, lense not trying to move, no sounds at all. Just that repeated message about "Turn the power off and on again". I tried going into the menu as suggested on the SONY site... still no joy. Really hating SONY now that I see they have been making this faulty product for four or more years and are still getting away with it. SONY should have come up with a better solution by now!!
We tend to blame ourselves, but I'm guessing no one damaged the camera in the many ways and it has miraculously responded the same. Good luck fellow shooters!

had same problem w/ sony dsc w-120. very frustrating! after reading many posts over much time and many attempts to bang it, slap it, vaccume it and compressed air treatment all to no avail, i was ready to order a replacement lense from ebay and tear into it myself. then i tried (per the advise of many) rapidly rapping the lense during power up process with a sharpie pen. wala! the camera started working properly! dont give up people and remember to always wear a hat during your repair process... it may keep you from pulling your hair out. thanks kids!

I was reading some of these posts and found one very helpful and that worked. While turning the camera off press firmly on the lens. My lens popped back in, sounded like it re-tracked itself. Very helpful. Maybe this reassurement that this method will work (at least for some cameras) will save you lots of time and money. I just wished I researched this sooner.

Hi I am having the same problem i have the sony cybershot dsc w130,
It was dropped by one of the girlies on a night out however i am due to go away and need it fixed.
Originally the lense was stuck out so i held it whilst it was doing the whole zoom in zoom out thing and now it opens and closes fine, however the problem is now is that it says there is an error message saying turn off and back on again, and repeats the whole proceedure when i try to do it again... Any help, i have read most of the comments i have tried giving it a good bang, still no use, ... i need to fix asap and is no longer in warranty...

Hi all, Right i was having the same problem with my camera, saying turn off and on then repeating the whole thing when i done it, so i figured if i took it apart and had a look inside worst thing would be that it was well and truely F******. which i thought it was. so i bought some tiny screw drivers from ebay (jewelry ones) took the camera apart (and it wasn't actually that hard), took the lense out, and put it all bk together again, and now it works!!!! so happy saved myself alot of money.
HOWEVER!!!!
If you do it remember to take out the battery as i got an electric shock from it, and got another one when IT was out, just make sure your finger doesnt hit the power/ take pic button whilst putting it back together, must say it did make my partner laugh. but did hurt alot more than a static shock!!!
No pain no gain. Good luck ppl!

It seems to me that most people don't know that the little WRIST STRAP LANYARD that comes with most cameras is not meant to hold the camera, but rather to prevent the camera from being dropped and cause many a mishap. As a preventative measure, you should always attach the strap to the camera and put your had through it. You would probably never drop your camera this way. Good luck.

Wow....I thought I was the only one with the Sony lens issue. I own DSC W90 and have been doing the camera banging routine every other month or so for a couple of years now. Lately it has been only partially successful because although the camera will reset itself with impact, sometimes the focus is so out of whack that it's useless. I had considered getting another Sony so I could share batteries/memory, but after reading all the problems here I will get some other brand.

Twisting/pushing the lens counterclockwise as you turn it off worked for me. When it reopened fully, I cleaned some residue off the lens rings, and now the dsc-h20 seems to be working fine. Of course, the battery hinge broke a while back, so I have to tape the bottom. If this camera didn't take such good pictures I would replace it. What a love/hate relationship. The camera didn't even drop before the lens got stuck in outward position.

Here's what you do take your memory stick out and turn the camera on. then gently hit the camera on the palm of your hand, if the lens don't come out try again about 3 times, don't hit too hard though (:

There is an easier way! Turn the camera on in play/replay mode. It should power up fine, make sure the battery bar is full. Go into the menu and find initialize (Menu->Setup->Setup1->Initialize). The camera will reset and the lense will move in and out to readjust itself and then you'll be all set.

Just fixed a DSC-P-73 that the lens wouldn't come out. The motor would rev like crazy & i wondered how to fix it so I looked online & found this page.
I took it apart (only 5 screws to remove the shell & 2 screws on the gearbox)
I found what looked like white grease or grit, turns out it was solid (not grease) used a pin to clear ir out & a fine paintbrush to make sure I got it off (only could pull off the top 3 gears easily (4mm wide gears)
put it back together & it works.

It was clear when taking it apart, that it had been in a sandy environment, as the tape & glued parts were covered in grit.

cameras & beach = bad!

The lens on my Sony DSCW710 stopped opening and I started getting the message "Turn the power off and on again". I could hear trhe gears clicking -- trying to open the lens. I tried tapping it and turning if off and on. Finally I took out the battery and really whacked in on the desk top. Then put the battery back in and tied again. It worked. I wondered whether there might be some dust or sand complicating things. So, I used my canned air to blow out anything that might be there. I opened and closed it several times and directed the blasts of air to the little gaps between the lens layers. So far, so good. Thanks everyone

I wonder if any of you guys will see this haha. I just inherited the old DSC-W7 from my parents now that I'm a freshman in college and I see that the problem of the lens refusing to retract is a problem that transcends the ages... I'm honestly not much of a tech gal and I'm afraid of upsetting my parents if they find out that I may have broke it (??? did I do this..??) the night of receiving it and it's apparently been around longer than I've been alive so I'm not ready to give up... so I've been browsing web forums all night (it's 3:57 AM now... and I have class at 9 AM LMFAO) and stumbled on this one... hitting it on my knee has not worked yet lol. I'm tempted to send it in to be fixed for that nearly $300 price tag (inflation is insane!!!) but I am a broke college student so not sure haha... thanks guys for your discussions!
