Weird problem with focus on DSC-T100

I bought a used DSC-T100 in very clean condition on eBay. It took me a while to realize that most of the images taken with full automatic default settings are blurry. Now here is the strange part: if I click on the macro option (the little flower symbol), then the camera takes acceptably sharp, autofocused images both at short range *and* at infinity and all ranges in between. I thought maybe reloading the firmware might repair this problem but the only firmware update available has to do with an entirely different problem. Still, I'm tempted to try it. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this focus problem? And why "macro" seems to correct it? I suppose I can just use the camera as it is with the "macro" workaround but I tend not to trust it now.

Noted in passing: at best, it does not take near as good pictures as my DSC-W7 which is outstanding in all ways.

What kind of photos were you taking? Were you taking close up photos of small objects? Or people photos from several feet away?

I usually keeps the "macro" mode on. It auto-focuses slower, because it forces the camera to try all the ranges. With the "macro" mode off, the camera assuming you are not shooting any close-up photos, so it only needs to auto-focus in the longer range.
