connecting VCR through Sony DCR-HC42E to laptop

I have connected the three up but there is no sign of life between the VCR and the Sony. Any suggestions. I only have Windows movie maker on my laptop.

Please be more descriptive on how you connected the three devices together. For example: 1) did you use Firewire? 2) Are you using coax? 3) What's connected to what?
