Vivitar Mini Digital Camera on Linux

Anyone out there running Linux? If so, please check whether the Vivitar Mini Digital Camera is working for you or not. If the reports are correct that the camera uses the MR97310 driver, it ought to work just fine in Linux, with support through gphoto2 and libgphoto2/camlibs/mars.

Again, please let me know.

Also, please anybody who has one of these, would you let me know what the USB Vendor and Product numbers are? Look in the "inf" file for that information. It is plain text so there ought to be no problem to read it.

If you report to me this information, then thanks!

I got this camera, I use Ubuntu linux. I installed the (windows) software using Wine. it worked perfectly. It sees my camera every time I plug it in. I've never tried it in windows.

Not having much luck with this camera under kubuntu... digiKam detects the camera as a "Digital Camera, CD302N." Using this default it can connect to the camera, and sees that I've taken 3 photos, but freezes at that point.

The Hal Device Manager says it's a "Sakar Digital no. 56379 Spyshot."

Metadata for the device icon that automagically pops up on the desktop says camera://Sakar...Spyshot@[usb:004,]/

Any assistance in getting this thing working would be appreciated -- it looks kinda cool for a $10.00 camera!

The camera works fine with Ubuntu. lsusb reports:

ID 093a:010e Pixart Imaging, Inc. Digital camera, CD302N/Elta Medi@ digi-cam/HE-501A

It has 16M of SDRAM, not well supported by the USB kernel modules (udev creates a character device for it in /dev/bus/usb, but less than 1k is accessible through that). gphoto2 recognizes it as a Mars MR97310 camera. It can be added in gtkam as an "Elta Medi@ digi-cam". Memory access is a little slow sometimes. So far, gphoto2 seems to be the best way of accessing the camera; gtkam is somewhat flaky.

I'm using OpenSuse 10.3 and it works perfect with digiKam 0.9.2. First time running, just go to Camera menu and select auto-detect.

I just saw one at the local Dollar General for $10. Read the package, it is windows, but wondering if I can get it to work on Ubuntu 8.04 laptop.

From what I've read, it may be possible. Since the store is a block away, I may go back and get one.

Thanks for the comments so far and I'll respond with what I found out.

I just got this cam for $10.00 at Walgreen's.
Under Xubuntu 8.04, gphoto2 does indeed give limited access to the device.

I retreived my photos as .ppm's with

"gphoto2 --auto-detect -a -P"

The "-P" option is "Get all files from folder"

All commands are WITHOUT quotes and should work with Gnome and XFCE.

Vivitar mini digital keychain camera is autodetected in Mandriva 2008.1

Digikam autodetects and installs module (drivers) through its camera configuration option. Not sure if all features are accessible but at least you don't have to install any software.

Linux gphoto works (use digiKam for a nice GUI) but it autodetects the camera as Pixart CN302N/Elta. The driver hung when downloading pictures and also reported 0 pictures.
When I manually changed the driver to "Vivitar Mini Digital Camera" it worked perfectly.
Here are the capabilities reported (notice no delete, but it does allow remote image capture):

The Vivitar keychain camera and many Sakar ones are easily usable (at least on Ubuntu 9.10) via F-Spot and GIMP.

You can import the .ppm files (the mini's raw files) with F-Spot and edit/convert with GIMP.

I had trouble with this on Ubuntu 11. I clicked on "Import" in F-Spot, but it didn't give the Vivitar as an option to import from, as I recalled it had in the past when I used previous versions of Ubuntu. Is it possible that Ubuntu haand F-Sport have reverted to not properly recognize the Vivitar keychain camera?

Title: Vivitar Mini Digital Camera on Mac
Weblog: Camera Hacker
Excerpt: Okay, the 905C OSX10.4.zip didn't do much to get this working on Mac OS X. However, I was able to use the camera by installing gphoto2 on OS X and using that to download the captured images from the camera. setting up and using gphoto2 is a bit advanced for beginners, but if you are desperate to get . . .
