flash too bright shooting close range with 3695B

I have a problem with my Vivitar 3695B camera. If I shoot very close (around 2 to 3 feet) to my subject, it becomes very very bright because of the flash. but if i dont use the flash, the captured image becomes dark. i have tried adjusting the exposure but it's still the same. how could I adjust this? what should be the adjustment in bright and dark environments. thanks.

The flash may be designed based on the range of focus (from 4 feet to infinity). Have you tried the macro mode? Maybe the flash would be adjusted to fire at a lower power in that mode (8 to 10 inches).

If not, then you'll have to turn the flash off and use available light (lamp, flash light, reflectors, etc).

What are you shooting so closely?
