Kodak Picture Kiosk Can't Read Compressed TIFF

I haven't printed photos in years. With the move from film cameras to digital cameras, I found it more convenient to store and share all my photos online. Relatives and friends from all over the world can see them instantly. The only time I print is when I want to create enlargements for someone's wall.

But last week, when I picked up my children from daycare, I mentioned to the teachers that we went to the Los Angeles Zoo for my daughter's birthday. One of them asked if my daughter could bring some photos in to share with the class. Of course, I couldn't say "no" to that. But my printing skill is rusty. I don't even know if my inkjet photo printers still worked after collecting dusts for a few years. My online photo printer, Shutterfly, would take too long.

The only solution I could think of is the Kodak Picture Kiosk at the local Target. So I copied all the photographs I want to print, in TIF format (see my "Shoot in RAW, Always!" article), onto a SD Card for the Kodak Picture Kiosk machine.

After inserting the SD Card into the Kodak Picture Kiosk machine, it attempted to show thumbnail previews for all the photographs on the SD Card. But about half of them wouldn't show. That's when I realized that the half that wouldn't display are photos that I had touched-up and saved again (as TIFF). I had enabled LZW compression for the TIFF files. And it's apparent that the Kodak Pictures Kiosk can't read compressed TIFF photos.

I'll have to remember in the future that the Kodak Picture Kiosk can read TIFF files, but just not the compressed versions.
