The thumbnail images (THM) that Canon digital cameras generates are really just JPEG images. However, Windows Explorer doesn't know that, so it doesn't display these thumbnail, even though it could. Instead, Windows Explorer simply displays a generic icon to represent the THM files. That's rather useless, especially if your camera generates RAW files without the equivalent JPG files.
Luckily on Microsoft Windows XP, there is a registry trick you can use to tell Windows Explorer that THM files can be read and viewed as thumbnails. I've used this trick for years and have attached the custom registry entries in the registry file below.
To use it, download the file to your computer. Double-click the registry file to apply it to your system. Microsoft Windows XP will ask you to confirm. Click "Yes" or "OK" to apply the change. After applying the registry file, you will be able to view Canon THM files in Windows Explorer.
Windows registry file is regular text files. After you download it, you can see the content of the registry file by right-clicking on it and then select 'Edit'. Alternatively, you can drag-and-drop it onto Notepad to open it.
Many other manufacturer's digital cameras are now generating THM file using JPEG files, so this custom registry file will work with those digital cameras too. If they generate a different extension than THM, you can easily modify the registry file with Notepad to a different file extension.

This registry modification doesn't work on Windows 7. I'm looking at other options. Anyone have any ideas?

Option 1: On Windows 7, you can at least double-click on one of these THM files and associate it to Windows Photo Viewer. Once you do that, you can double-click on any THM files and bring up the photo in Windows Photo Viewer.
