I got this Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM lens just before a dog show in the hopes it would help me get the best shot. I only had one camera and wanted to cut down on time lost switching lenses. When I got the lens I tried t out right away.
First you will need to know a few things. An external flash is a must for this Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM lens. You will do best if you can bounce the flash or other lighting. this Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM lens becomes surprisingly long when it extends to it's longes focal length. The weight of it can also be a little much but when attached to a heavier camera it balanced out okay.
This Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM lens did alright but it struggles in low lighting. It's just not a good camera for low light situations. Outside in the sun it does better. It gets very clear and clean images when used outside under the sun. The lens is also to slow. The lower the aperture the slower the speed it reacts.
Over all, this Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM lens is simply average and nothing special. It does get good photos but you can not easily get anything great from it. For outdoor shots the focal length ability is great and is a great feature to have. It would work best with full frame cameras. If you are simply taking snap shots with the programmed settings on your camera and are not trying for anything professional then this Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM lens will work for you just fine. It performs well around 6f-8f as well. If you use a great external flash for low light shots then that will help for low light shots. It will be better if you know how to bounce the flash properly.
Due to the compromises they had to make to get a lens of this focal length on the market for this low price it is not as great as it could be. It is slow inside and must have a flash in use in low light, though for the average shooter this is okay. There is softness around the edges if you try to blow the images up past a average printer paper size. It is not good for close up photos as it has lost it's short depth of focus in the process of going long. You will need a tripod and flash to get a decent shot up close. This is on top of it being too heavy and long, which makes it awkward.
I would recommend this Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM lens for those that want to go beyond the Rebel Kit Lens. If you need the extra focal length and can handle the extra weight. Otherwise keep practicing with the lens you do have and save up for a better upgrade later. If you do not mind the limitations then it is a good lens for the price. For beginners this Canon EF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 USM lens is just fine but for fine art and professional images you will need a better lens than this one. A real professional can take good images with any lens but this one is best for the beginner.
