Review of the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM Lens

The EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM Lens from Canon is a fantastic lens. It is ideal for anyone who specializes in portrait photography. With an 85mm focal length, the lens perfectly blurs the out of focus areas to create stunning portraits. This lens is also good for shooting at indoor sporting events and weddings because it is good at capturing photos in low light situations. But don't expect to be running around with this one: a lens of this quality is made of a lot of glass, and this lens is extremely dense. While aiding in stabilizing the camera, this can be detrimental for those who are expecting to take more than just a few photographs without a tripod.

The amazing diffusion of this lens comes with a cost – the range of focus for this lens is very small. If you don't hit your focus exactly right, you are going to end up with a lot of very blurred photographs (and a lot of very mad customers). Do not expect to shoot perfectly with this lens right out of the box unless you're quite seasoned.

The lens has flare-suppression coating technology, which, combined with Canon's ideal lens element, and internal anti-reflective technology, improves the image quality over this lens' predecessor. The auto focus is almost inaudible, and the implementation of the latest ultrasonic motor (hence, USM) makes this lens focus at much higher speed than the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L USM (the predecessor). This lens has the widest aperture of any Canon lens on the market but remains portable and handy in even the lowest lit conditions.

The lens itself is extremely nice looking – who wouldn't want a huge lens with the beautiful red ring signifying that it is a Canon on it? This lens is excellent for the professional who wants to stand out from the others. The EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM is portable enough to take to a wedding (and perfect for the lighting, too). You can be certain that everyone will want your pictures after you show them how clear and alluring they are (thanks to your new lens' excellent diffusion blur).

Overall, I would recommend this lens to both the newcomer and the seasoned professional. The lens offers a lot of functionality while retaining executive styling. This lens will allow those new to photography a chance to understand blurs and tedious manual focusing (taking more pictures to compensate), and offer those experienced in the art a new way to focus in on what's really important in your photographs. If you're still not sure, try renting this lens before you buy it, but if you are ready to go for it, get ready to empty your wallet: this lens runs about $2,000. It's not a steal, but it will certainly pay for itself after just a few portrait sessions, and you'll know you're shooting solid because you're shooting a Canon. With proper care, this lens will last two lifetimes. It is built well. Two thumbs up from me.
