Small and Lightweight Nikon AF Nikkor 35mm f/2D Lens

Nikon AF Nikkor 35mm f/2D is a compact, wide angle and lightweight lens with focal length of 35mm, minimum aperture of F22 and fast maximum aperture of F2.8 that makes it excellent for handheld shooting. Lens has an aperture ring and excellent optical design that makes it good for general photography like landscape, architecture and occasions such as birthday or wedding. Lens is perfect on the line of Nikon standards and works well with DSLR and Nikon 35mm cameras.

AF Nikkor f/2D from Nikon has six lens elements in five groups and seven numbers of diaphragm blades. All its elements are duly employed with Super Integrated coating that not only provides uniform color balance but also reduces flare, ghosting and reflection on wide wavelengths. Moreover, coating to each element is customized based on glass and type. Lens produces good results when on move or in low light conditions.

This lens has 62 degrees of picture angle with edge to edge sharpness but for Nikon DX cameras, it is 44 degrees. When focus is correct, centre is near wide open that make lens produce sharp images. Lens is good for portrait photography having 0.85 feet of close focal distance and reproduction ratio of up to 1:4.2. It accepts filters of 52mm size and has distance scale feature.

Nikon AF 35mm provides distance information with most of D and F series cameras like F6, F100, F60, D100 and D70 etc. Lens has nice IR performance at all apertures and is provided with infrared focusing marks and Depth of field features. It also has usable circularly polarized filters. Lens weighs only 205g with length of 1.7 inches and diameter of 2.5 inches that makes it small, light and easy to handle.

Lens body is of plastic with metal bayonet ring and accessories that are supplied along with lens include case, front and rear caps and 52mm snap-on. On negative side, this lens from Nikon has some issues with chromatic aberration and vignetting when used wide open in high contrast conditions. Body is comparatively weak with plastic material and there are soft corners up to F4.

Overall, vignetting is not a big problem with this lens. Lens works well for both FX and DX cameras and its peak performance is from F5.6 to F11. Priced at about $350 and available with a warranty tag of five years, Nikon AF Nikkor 35mm f-2D is a good lens especially for DX shooters.
