Sigma 10-20mm F/3.5 EX DC HSM

Sigma Corporation of America is very well known for its high quality lens that latest cameras boast of. They provide lens for different types of cameras ranging from the basic models to the most complicated ones which are used by professional photographers.

At the recently held PMA 2009, Sigma made an announcement about an ultra-wide angle zoom lens, the 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM – the very latest from its stable. This lens has a unique new design that manages to squeeze a significantly fast F3.5 constant maximum aperture into a body that is larger than the company's previous models.

Its angle of view ranges from an amazing 102.4 to 63.8 which makes sure that pictures taken using these lens are absolutely striking with unbelievable perspective. The maximum aperture provided in this lens is F3.5 and it is most suitable for indoor photography. This helps in more providing more emphasis on the subject being shot.

Correction of color aberration is taken care of by two Extraordinary Low Dispersion (ELD) glass elements and a Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass element which are rated among the best. There are four aspherical lenses that are used to provide correction for distortion of pictures and surprisingly allow compact and lightweight construction. Flare and ghosting issues are taken care of by the Super Multi-layer coating that is in-built.

Another best-in-its class feature is that the 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM lens assures high quality image throughout the entire zoom range which is not found in many lenses. The 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM has HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) that not only ensures a very silent and high-speed AF but also provides for full-time manual focusing capability.

The minimum focusing distance of this lens is 9.4 inches or 24cm for the complete zoom range and its maximum magnification ratio is 1:6.6. It has seven aperture blades and the filter attachment size is 82mm. The lens mount can support that of Canon, Nikon(D), Sony (D) and Pentax other than its own company's, Sigma.

The dimension of this lens is 87.3mm x 88.2mm or 3.4in x 3.5in and the accessories provided by Sigma for this lens are the case for the lens and a Petal-type Hood. This Petal-type Hood helps in blocking extraneous light and also minimizes internal reflection. The design of the lens also incorporates an inner focusing system. Since it eliminates front lens rotation, it makes the lens extremely suitable for using the Petal-type Hood that is provided with the same.

Sigma's latest offering comes as an answer to its biggest rival, Tamron's lens, the SP AF 10-24mm F3.5-4.5 Di-II LD Aspherical (IF). Olympus is also a strong contender with its very impressive Zuiko Digital ED 9-18mm F4-5.6. Market experts expect Sigma's new offering to be sold alongside their previous models but as a high-priced premium product.

Once the product is introduced in the market for retail use, the actual pros and cons of this lens can be ascertained. Only time will tell if Sigma's 10-20mm F3.5 EX DC HSM lens stands tall amidst its tough competition.
