Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX Macro upgrade chip

Recently, I had acquired a Digital Rebel. And my trusty Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX Macro lens had some issues with it. So I sent the following e-mail to Sigma:

"Hi, I have had my Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX Macro lens for years. It had worked fine on all of my Canon EOS cameras, Rebel, Elan IIe, D30, etc. However, I recently acquired a Digital Rebel and the lens works fine at f/2.8. At any other aperture, the camera shows an error and would not trigger the shutter. Could you tell me how to resolve this problem?"

Sigma's service is extremely quick!

I got back my lens today, a week and a half after I sent it in. The lens came back working just fine with my Digital Rebel now. Sigma even packed it in a lens carton and wrapped it in plastic.

The lens exterior was cleaned and the glasses are spotless. Not that I don't keep my lens elements clean in the first place, but one glance and it's obvious that Sigma cleaned them to a gleam. I wish I had sent back the lens hood, front and rear cap, too, for a good clean.

Saw your Sigma 105mm f2.8 EX problem in the forums

I live in UK, and a friend from USA bought over to me a Sigma 28-105mm f2.8 and the serial number starts with 1

I have the same problem, at f2.8 all ok,at any other aperture. the camera shows an err 99

I have the Canon 300D (in USA is call Digital Rebel).

I call Sigma UK, they told me to send it in with a receipt, if with out a receipt than will cost me 39 uk pound (72 US dollar), in your case, it was free of charge.

Al you might know, we in UK everything are expensive, including this new chip service ?

Hi Sam,

You'll want to send that in as soon as possible. The upgrade chips are in limited quantities. When they run out, you won't be able to upgrade your lens any longer.

Hi Chieh

I have two choices, either do it over here in UK, pay the 72 us dollar charges, all can be done (as far as I know, there are lots of chips here in UK)
or
I let my friend take the lens back to US (he is stringing with me in Wimbledon at this moment, still have two weeks to go !) by the time he is back in US will be the 5 / 6th July. Do you think will be too late ? or by any chance I can reserve one of this chip ''now'' and ask them to hold on to it until he is back ?

So will your friend bring the lens back to you after it's fixed or ship it back to you? Have you considered how much it would cost if he shipped it back to you?
