The Tokina AT-X 840 D AF 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 is built well and you are getting a quality product if you buy this lens. It is so well built I think you would have to really try to damage this thing. It is a bit heavier than other lenses but that is due to the solid build. The weight should not be much of an issue if you use a tripod with it and it does come with a tripod attachment collar. It also comes with a good plastic lens hood with a velveteen liner to prevent reflections.
This lens should be great for nature photography and wildlife images. It has also proven to do well on aviation photography. Its auto focus is a bit slower than some but for most things will be fast enough. The ability to focus lock onto the subject helps greatly with capturing clear images of a moving subject. It is a louder lens than the USM lenses I have used but I think the focus lock is fast enough to make up for this. It seems to have no problem following a subject and locking in and does not hunt around for a focus the way some other lenses do.
The lens cap is easy to put in place and remove quickly with its center pinch locking mechanism even with the lens hood in place. The tripod ring is a great bonus but the knob can get in the way of the zoom sometimes but this is solved by my holding the camera differently. I feel this lens is as good or even a little better than the Canon EF 75-300 USM. It is a little heavier but seems to perform much better. This lens is definitely worth the price.
This lens gets consistently good images and is durable, so you will get a lot of use out of it. It produces good sharp images and is really not to heavy when you compare it to some but does have a good weight to it one may need to get used to. Images tend to be bright and with good color out put. The lens is easy to clean and durable. The polarization adjuster means you do not to worry about removing the lens for most shots.
The camera is good for sports and other action because it does focus fairly quickly and locks on the subject. The focal length makes it ideal for the distances need for sports events and wildlife photography. The size of the lens at its full zoom length is also not too large. This lens performs its best at around 8f. It should have some sort of support when shooting at greater distances as it can get motion blur from any shakes. So a tripod or mono pod is recommended. Over all this is a great lens for wildlife and distance action and is a good lens for most and photographer on a budget that wants to try for those better shots.
