HI Chieh,
thanks for your comments on some of my ideas regarding lens adapters.
I see that the telephoto kit below contains an adapter that goes between the 740 lens and the actual telephoto lens.
HD LENS SET FOR OLYMPUS SP-500 C-750 C-740 C-765 C-770
I wonder if this is the kind of intermediate lens that would be needed to somehow put between my 740 and a typical SLR telephoto lens like the one from my Olympus manual focus so that the image works out.
As you know, just putting the telephoto lens in front of my camera lens you end up with much up the image cut off.

The lenses in that eBay auction is correctly adjusted for your C-740. So you will be in the same situation with the SLR lens. Maybe slight difference with the vignette. Perhaps the 2x will eliminate the vignette.
But even then, I believe your SLR lens won't have the right focal point. You'll have to introduce a lens element to correct the focal point. It's been a while since I played around with putting a SLR lens in of a P&S camera. I'll have to play around with it some more and get back to you. Take a look at Afocal Photography for starters.
If you are just talking about hacking the no lens element lens adapter . . . maybe with the right length, you can focus correctly. But you still have to deal with the vignette issue.

tks, Chieh,
I'm just fooling around as you suggest.
The reason I thought that the ebay lens might help is because there is a middle adapter that apparently must be used between the 2x or the wideangle lens. Notice that there are 3 lens like things in the photo. Furthermore that middle adapter seemed to have some glass lenses in it so that's what made me think that it would give me a head start if I put it on in front of my minolta telephoto.
I'll surf to what you suggested.

Just a heads up, Don, I believe that the middle adapter is just a tube, with no lens element. It's only for attachment of the 0.5x and 2x teleconverter on your camera without your zoom lens getting in the way.

tks Cheng,
do you know anyone who's used them? Reasonable results? I don't need much just to zoom in on birds.

I have not used the ones you specifically mentioned in the eBay auction. There are a lot of accessory lenses made by third parties. They are generally a lot cheaper than ones provided by your camera manufacturer, and lesser in quality as well.
Nevertheless, due to their low price, they are still to play around with and see what kind of results you could get before you shell out a lot of money for the good ones. Just make sure they are compatible with your camera, meaning no vignette and can focus. If the ad say they are, it's a good chance they are.
All the accessory lenses that I've tried, I've documented in my lens reviews.

I'm a hardware hacker in the extreme with access to metal lathes etc. Can you point me to a URL that's got the best details on these lens adapters for telescopes etc for the do it yourselfers? I've done a bit of surfing but so far I haven't found the best one for diyers yet.
I also have a few eyepieces from some telescopes that may be useful and of course old SLR lenses from my minolta SRT101 days.

Is an eyepiece an eyepiece? ie are they mostly all the same except for some different sizes and focal lengths? Are some more targeted for different applications? I'm trying to study it on the web but its a bit like drinking from a fire hose.
I have some "eyepieces" from that telescope, is this something that I could mount between my digital camera and an external telephoto lens to help manage the afocal thing and vignetting or all these different focal lengths and sizes very critical and if I don't get exactly the right spec'd eyepiece nothing good will happen? Again, we are just hacking here.
I'm thinking I could put that eyepiece between my digital olympus lens and the external SLR minolta zoom telephoto. As you know just direct coupling between the 2 without a lens in between doesn't seem to work very well.
