LEICA TRI-ELMAR-M 16-18-21mm f/4 ASPH -- An Attractive Wide Angle Lens

Leica is a German company and is well known for producing cameras, microscopes and geosurvey equipment. Leica comes with a new type of lens which gives incredible versatility and optical brilliance called LEICA TRI-ELMAR-M 16-18-21 mm f/4 ASPH SLR (Single Lens Reflex) Lens.

TRI-ELMAR-M 16-18-21 gets constructed with the combination of ten elements in seven groups. The new TRI-ELMAR captures 16 mm wide angle photography in perfect style. The dimensions of this lens is 63 x 55 mm (length x diameter). The minimum focusing distance will be 50 cm. The maximum aperture at wide and tele is f/4. The magnification value is 0.03x. The lowest aperture value is 22.

The Leica universal wide angle viewfinder M offers accurate capture of images or subjects using the LEICA TRI-ELMAR-M 16-18-21 mm f/4 ASPH. The viewfinder M contains frames for 16, 18, 21, 24 and 28 mm. The viewfinder is insensitive to unwanted lighting effect and provides high resolution. The eye piece contains a screw mount for optionally available diopter correction of lenses. The Tri-Elmar is not a zoom, but it offers a three focal length lens of 16 mm, 18 mm and 21 mm.

The angles of view at diagonal, horizontal and vertical are as follow. For 35 mm (24 x 36 mm), the angle of view at 16 mm will be 107, 97 and 74 degree respectively. At 18 mm, the angle is 100, 90 and 67 degree respectively. At 21 mm, the angle is 92, 81 and 60 degree respectively. For digital (18 x 27 mm), the angle of view at 16 mm will be 90, 80 and 59 degree respectively. At 18 mm, the angle is 84, 74 and 53 degree respectively. At 21 mm, the angle is 75, 65 and 46 degree respectively.

Leica Tri-Elmar features a 6 bit coding, which allows the digital M camera to read the information optically and to identify the type of lens getting used. Due to minimal distortion, the highly demanding architecture can be obtained even at 16 mm. The two aspherical elements give ultra compact shape. The internal focusing enhances the close focus range quality by adopting the floating element principle.

The lens hood is screw-on type containing E67 size filters as filter holder in the filter mount. TRI-ELMAR-M 16-18-21 weighs 335 grams (11.82 ounces). The three focal lengths show excellent contrast and sharpness. The Tri-Elmar offers nice focus. Overall LEICA TRI-ELMAR-M 16-18-21 mm ultra wide angle is an appealing lens for the shooters.
