Leica D Vario-Elmarit 14-50mm f/2.8-3.5 Mega O.I.S. -- An Enthralling Aspherical Lens

The Leica D Vario-Elmarit 14-50mm f/2.8-3.5 Aspherical MEGA O.I.S. Lens is the world's first interchangeable standard zoom lens for digital SLR cameras in collaboration with Panasonic. It contains Panasonic's MEGA O.I.S (Optical Image Stabilization) system and an aperture ring along with the focus ring and the zoom ring. The “D” indicates it get designed for new digital system. It follows Four Thirds standard.

The lens gets constructed with a combination of 16 elements in 12 groups with two aspherical lenses. The maximum diameter and length of Leica D Vario-Elmarit is 3.1 inches (79 mm) and 4 inches (103 mm) respectively. The focal length of the lens is 14mm to 50mm with the zoom of 3.6x. This lens can be used with other manufacturers using the four thirds standard lens mount. The front lens is fixed and it does not rotate during zoom or focusing. The filter size is 72mm. It includes a lens hood. This lens comes with a front lens cap and a rear lens cap.

When this lens gets mounted on DMC-L1, the users can feel analog like operation with the aperture ring on the lens barrel. Leica D Vario-Elmarit also has a lens storage bag. It helps to capture clear images from corner to corner across the entire zoom range at minimum distortion. It comprises two large diameter aspherical lenses which give high optical performance standards. The multi-coated lens elements reduce ghosting and flare to an extent. It includes seven blades in the circular aperture diaphragm which provides brilliant out-of-focus characteristics.

The aperture ring provides pleasant operation. The minimum aperture range of this lens is f/22 tele at wide angle and a bright maximum aperture of f/2.8 tele. It has a built-in image stabilizer which reduces the handshake. The integrated mega O.I.S (Optical Image Stabilizer) makes this lens possible to capture clear, sharp images in macro shooting and even in low light conditions. It provides more shooting flexibility. This Leica lens maximizes its advantages by integrating Panasonic's Venus Engine into the lens unit.

The minimum focus distance of this lens is 10.6 inches (29 cm). The magnification of this lens is 0.16×. It weighs 486g (17.15 ounces).
