Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 400mm f/2.8G ED VR

The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 400mm f/2.8G ED VR Lens is a telephoto lens from Nikon that focuses incredibly quickly. It is a premium ultrafast lens aimed at the professional market and commands a price of over 6000.

The lens is optimised for both the DX and FX image sensors and aims to deliver a sharp image from corner to corner. It delivers well in this regard. The lens produced good quality images over a considerable distance.

Build quality is good. The lens is rugged and well put together. It can withstand the punishment it will receive in the field. The trade off of this is that it is a little on the heavy side, the magnesium barrel goes a long way to counter act this and it is by no means too heavy. That is just nit picking about what is a great lens.

The lens comes with Nikons exclusive nano crystal coating which helps to reduce lens flare and glare. This is a great feature, especially when shooting into sunsets and sunrises. The silent wave motor means that the auto focus operates very quickly and extremely quietly. This is a great plus for nature and wildlife photography, especially when combines with the anti glare coating this is an excellent telephoto lens for capturing wildlife pictures.

Another application that the lens excels with is sports photography. The quick auto focus make tracking the action easy and the telephoto zoom means that all of a pitch or field is within reach for a sharp clear image.

The excellent performance of the lens does come at some cost though. As already mentioned the lens is quite heavy. It is also quite large. It is not really suitable for hand held jobs, especially over long periods. It is definitely best used with some kind of support from a tripod or monopod.

Another cost of the excellent image quality and performance in the field is the most obvious one, the price. This lens is an expensive piece of kit. If you are on a tight budget then the lens will be cost prohibitive.

If however you are a professional photographer and demand the best kit or are lucky enough to be in a position where money is not a barrier to purchase you would be wise to consider adding this excellent piece of equipment to your camera bag. It is certainly a worthy addition to anyone's equipment list.
