Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D -- The Decent Lens

Nikon is a Japanese multinational corporation with its headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. They are famous for optics and imaging products. Their products include cameras, microscopes, measurement instruments, binoculars and steppers used in photolithography. Nikon introduced an NIKKOR type lens called Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens. It has a very good build quality and its performance is simply superb.

The lens gets constructed with a combination of six elements in five groups. The size of the lens is 39 x 63.5 mm (1.53 x 2.5 inches) (length x diameter). The focal length capacity of the lens is 50 mm. The minimum and maximum apertures of the lens are f/22 and f/1.8 respectively. It includes seven straight diaphragm blades in it. The closest focus distance of the lens is 0.45 m (1.47 feet). The maximum magnification provided by this lens 1/6.6. The diagonal angle of view offered by this lens is 46 degrees. The lens bears a filter sized 52 mm in diameter.

The D-Type lens design provides the distance information with flash. Using the reverse coupler, the user can reverse mount this lens to a camera and reverse mount it to front of another lens to take macro shots. The lens auto focusing is very fast on all types of cameras. When the AF screw gets turned to a single full rotation, the lens can focus from infinite to six feet (180 cm). The ISO speed of this lens is 200. It contains a HR-2 rubber hood. AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D lens is very sharp and has a good contrast in every aperture.

The filter threads and the external barrel are made up of plastic. The focus ring is rubber-covered with plastic. It has a metal lens mount for mounting the lenses. The small focus ring operates smoothly at every area. Some spherical aberrations make the lens less contrast at f/1.8 and it works perfect by f/4. When AF operation takes place, some moderate noise gets generated. The chromatic aberrations are not at all a problem in this lens. The vignetting is very well controlled.

The distortion is not found in this lens. The lens includes a multi-layer coating which minimizes the ghost and flare. The depth of field control is excellent at f/22. The lens weighs 155 grams (5.46 ounces). This AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D has a high optical quality and comes at lower price. It turned out to be a popular lens among the photographers. The lens is light in weight and very compact to use. It is best suitable for travel photography. Nikon AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D Lens is priced around 125 US Dollars.
